i have a msi mobo that need to have the bios updated in order to be compatible with the intel kabylake cpu. i'm wondering if this compatibility update just allows me to run the cpu on this mobo only or does it do more than that and make all the kabylake features available to the mobo, know what i'm saying?

BIOS updates allow the CPU to work.

They do not enable any features that a Skylake CPU didn't have on the same motherboard.

that makes sense...i went on intel's website and compared the features for skylake and kabylake cpu's and found that i could do without the new features in kabylake

Why wouldn't you want updates that will enhance the board's capability?

I don't know if things have changed or not, but back in the Athlon XP days the only thing "Added support for..." meant was giving the CPU a name. They (Athlon XP mobiles) functioned exactly the same without the update. I remember having to hack BIOS's to get the right name to display.

However, I'm not sure how windows detect CPU's. In the case of AMD, they often have patches that correct bugs or improve performance. If Windows relies on the BIOS to identify the CPU, then that just might not happen.

I have never seen such a patch from Intel that I can recall though.
