Clarification about different CPUs

I apologize in advance for the sister post in the AMD CPU section. I want opinions from both sides of the aisle. I wish there was a universal CPU one for me to post this in.

I'm at an impasse building my new desktop, mainly because I can't look at anything until I know which CPU socket I'm using. Just want clarification about two processors.

On one hand theres the AMD Phenom II X4. It has:
  • 4 cores
  • 3.5GHz
  • L1 = 4 x 128KB
  • L2 = 4 x 512KB
  • L3 = 6MB
  • Hypertransport = 4000MHz

On the other hand theres the Intel Core i7. It has:
  • 4 cores
  • 3.4GHz
  • L1 = not listed
  • L2 = 4 x 256KB
  • L3 = 8MB
  • FSB = not listed

Now, I don't know much about CPUs, but I don't see how Intel can justify the extra $100 based off this information.

I want this desktop to be upgradeable, so whichever motherboard I decide on should have a socket that won't become outdated in a couple of years. Also, I plan on being able to remotely control a programming environment that is on this desktop. I plan on developing programs, so the CPU has to work with that.

Intel chips are significantly faster clock for clock. Subtract ~800 Mhz from the AMD quad core frequency to get the equivalent Intel G1 i7 chip.

AMDs quads really compete more in the Intel i3 range so that would be a better comparison. However i3s are still faster clock for clock but not as fast when running 4 thread tests.

That Phenom II X4 970 3.5GHz is closest in performance overall to the Core i5 750 2.66GHz here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215

The Phenom II X4 970 uses around 25-30W more power under load, but if it's fast enough for you and in your budget (and you don't plan on doing extreme overclocking), there's nothing wrong with it. If you do overclock, the i5 750 will pull far ahead of the Phenom II X4 970 when both are overclocked. The newer Sandy Bridge Core i3 2100 is even faster in many tasks.
 
Thanks for the responses. I'm going to do some more reading on this, but Intel's looking pretty good.

AMD has been better at keeping socket compatible in the recent past but afaict their next set of new chips will not be compatible with their current sockets.

Intel have just switched to a new socket and it is not clear whether their next set of mainstream chips will be compatible with the current socket.

So intel is probablly a better bet from this perspective but I suspect by the time it's really worth upgrading your CPU both AMD and intel will be on new sockets.
 
Intel, done... The i7's are wonderful platforms, have been for some time and will be for some time more. Can't go wrong there.

(I just don't care about OCing and like Stock cuz it does all I need @ stock)
But yeah bro i7 950 294.99 Intel CPu's with an added 29.99 - 89.99 Heat-Sink-Cooler (Since Intel Stock Cooler is junk, you gotta throw out the BIG BUCKS to get any performance these days)

325.00 - 380.00 gets you so much performance. :p Especially when your playing Starcraft 2 @ 800x600 resolution.
I mean you'll get like 160 FPS compared to like 80 FPS on an AMD you know? Yeha totally wiked BRO! Or if you play WoW @ 640x480 OMG MAN!! It's Unbelievable the performance difference!

And yeah all Intel i7 CPU's.... they Actually do out perform this AMD X3 88.99 CPU :D Especially when you factor in Price/Performance! Wait...Oh nevermind just get the INTEL.

Oh yeah and this AM3 CPU (and all other AM3 CPU's) slide right into Bulldozer new AM3+ MOBO's ;) That's gonna suck for me, I'll have to use this 4.0+ Ghz Quad Core capable CPU again...:p I hate my life!

So I'll be runnin this CPU 4.0 Ghz+ Quad Core capable CPU when I can get a BULLDOZER MOBO, and something besides this Stock AMD cooler. ;)
When that no longer does what I want it to, I'll just pick up a Bulldozer CPU :eek: And OC the bajesus out of it, or keep it stock IDC.
Plus I'll have like HUNDREDS of dollars in my pocket leftover which will just be like, soooooTOTALLY stupid BRA.

I'll probly get an infraction for posting this when the Intel Fanboys see this, oh well I'm to [H] or sumthing :rolleyes:

the new sandy bridge line kinda cleared things up i think? since all i7's are 4/8 and i5's are 4/4

Yeah, an i3 530 or i3 540 would be faster and use less power. But like AM2+/AM3, LGA 1156 is a dead socket. The only new chips scheduled for 1156 are a couple of Pentium models.

Depending on how much the OP has to spend and whether he will overclock, it's hard to recommend specific models.
 
There is a reason why Intel regained all the market share they initially lost. I actually work in the manufacturing of these... trust me AMD sucks nowadays. They have X3s because their X4 yield sucked and had to disable cores to sell defective chips. They dump their manufacturing organization through a spin off to AbuDhabi investors because it was bleeding money and are now looking at foundries for their manufacturing. Until they actually decide to move their CPUs to TSMC, I won't be purchasing an AMD CPU.
