Poking around on CL's freebies section you can find gems if you're persistent enough. I normally scour the freebies section and have come across some really good pc parts. Unfortunately those parts are posted in areas which are too far away. Not cost effective gas wise.

Well today doing my usual lurking about I stumbled upon a post from someone tossing out an P67 setup. Fired off an email letting them know I'd like to snag them up today. They replied quick and stated the parts will be in a box outside by a laundromat, but that they would not be able to guard it as they're moving. So I hauled ass and got there in 15min and found the box. They were nice enough to kind of hide it from plain view so no one would be able to get to it before me.

So I got home with my dusty treasure box and when I looked inside I found:

    MSI P67A-G45 (B3) board with I/O shield
    i5 2500k chip
    CM Hyper 212 (1st version)
    8GB (2x4gb) GSKill Ripjaws X DDR3-1333
MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr III Power Edition OC

And of course all the dust/lint and caked on grime was also included.

So with some cleaning up, I have a pretty decent freebie back-up rig woohoo.

Any of you guys scored freebies from CL?

Nice score, could use that kind of machine myself at this point, something reliable and stable. I haven't necessarily found any freebies on CL over the years but I have had instances where people will be selling something like an entire desktop machine with monitor/printer/etc for some reason at a price that I just can't believe and upon contacting them it's usually being done - more often than not - because of some virus or malware issue and they can't afford or choose not to have some tech fix it up for 'em.

Had that happen about a decade ago with an ad for a Desk Precision desktop system with a nice 19" widescreen LCD - at the time it was current it was like a $2500 system with the LCD included. The seller was asking $125 for it, I contacted them, found out they were dumping it for a malware issue and I offered to fix it up for 'em free of charge (because I do that on occasion for good Karma) and they said they appreciated it but would just prefer to offload the machine.

So I got it for the $125 asking price and they even delivered it as well, was pretty awesome. Took like an hour to get the issue resolved, wasn't a very serious malware so I just did a clean install of Windows 7 on it and installed the drivers and put it right back on craigslist for $200 and it sold the same day I had it delivered so, can't beat that I guess. Well I could have if I got it for free but even so, that was one of those good deals from CL for me. :)

After some really good cleaning up on both the cpu cooler, gpu cooler, some fresh thermal goo on both, it fired right up. Installing winders to see what it's capable of.

Well I'm impressed with this little chitbox, lol. Managed to get 4.5Ghz with 1.36v and ram @ 1600-9-9-9-24-1T & 1.55v and it's been running XTU full bore for the past 20min. I got it stressing the cpu for 1hr. Temps with the CM 212 V1 hover around mid 50's. Also as an added bonus, using a pos Allied 350w psu and it's not even getting warm, lmao!! I know I'll need a quality psu for it tho. Even a freebie needs to be taken care of right ;)

I'll keep lurking around CL to see if I can snag a free or cheapo case to house it :D

    That's hilarious.

As for that system, the 570 is a bit old, but otherwise it would be more than adequate for gaming purpose with a new card.

Heck no! Can't beat the price. Should be able to get that 2500K going pretty fast with that aftermarket cooler it came with.

I remember years ago, I was scouring craigslist, not free but I saw an ad that was VERY vague. I noticed the black "Intel i7 Inside" sticker on the front, and they had it listed for $200

I decided to shoot an e-mail, and apparently it belonged to a roommate who left campus and left all his stuff, they have no idea what happened but they were selling his stuff to pay for his rent for that month since he wasn't responding.

Upon opening and testing, it was an i7-980x, 24gb RAM, Nvidia gtx 690, 850w PSU Thermaltake TR2 I believe. Ended up selling the CPU for $500 alone, was a huge find.

Ad said something like "Computer PC for sale" and said "$200 looking to sell asap", no other description about it. Always wise to look at the pictures closely to see what you can identify

Well the hits just keep coming! Scored a black Antec P180 case along with a half decent 550 watt psu. After some serious needed cleaning, I put it all together. Gotta luv freebies!
