So I'm definately new to the virtualization field but I'm learning.

Right now I run linux on my laptop and I plan to get a new desktop. I need microsoft office for work (along with Endnote) to collaborate with others. Adobe Illustrator is also nice to have.

I like running linux, its fun, get to play with some nice new projects on git-hub, etc.

I've been using VirtualBox to run Office and Adobe apps in a XP VM but its annoying and doesn't integrate really well.

Wine really doesn't work well with Office 2010+Endnote Cite while you write

I've been reading about Citrix server and the thin-client solution to run office apps on my desktop. I would be happy to build a server (assuming the software isnt too expensive). If it would allow me to run ms office better than in the VM.

Is this possible? Does it work well? How do I do it in a non-enterprise environment?

Office 2010 works just fine in XA6. We use it here at my company and haven't had any issues with it. We actually roll it out to thin users as well through XenDesktop.

I haven't had any issues with it at all. We make some changes so that when the user wants to save the document they create, it goes to their personal folder on the file server, but other then that.
 
Be aware though, that non-volume licensing versions of 2010 may flat out refuse to install on a TS machine. Just ran into this when I tried to install it on XA6 with the Action Pack disc instead of the licensing kit one. (I just love MS's media vs license games)
 
Citrix XenApp works great for delivering Microsoft Office to tons of devices running different OS's (Linux, iOS, Android etc). The protocol it uses, ICA, requires much less bandwidth than RDP.

Most people wouldn't consider it for a non-enterprise environments since it requires a backed infrastructure of SQL, Active Directory, and Terminal Services. For the most part, you can't just buy single licenses online so you would have to call up a reseller (http://www.citrix.com/partners/locator) and see how much a single license would cost.

Despite these negatives, it is definitely possible to setup at home if you really wanted to. I happen to work for Citrix, so I get testing licenses which I use on my home lab and it works great. If you have any more questions, let me know...
