Little background, skip the first two paragraphs if you get too bored:

In a previous thread I mentioned I was setting up a lab for our phone recording software/hardware. One of the environments we record alot is Cisco VOIP. Normally all phone system configuration is left up to the customer so I'm not familar with it at all.

My first idea is to record the Packet8 IP phones we use in the office. However after using a wireshark to analyze the traffic from the phone I see it uses the DIS protocol (for those of you like me whos never heard of it [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_Interactive_Simulation"]Distributed Interactive Simulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]). I've never heard of our software analyzing these kinds of packets before to extract a voice stream. I've only seen RTP and UDP protocols.

SO! If it turns out I cannot use our phones the only option is have is to pickup a used CUCM and attempt a basic config so that I can get internal calls going and record them.

My ebay searches led me to this: [ame="http://cgi.ebay.com/Cisco-3640-w-CallManager-Express-CME-CCVP-Lab-Router-/310326928543?pt=COMP_EN_Routers&hash=item4840ed249f#ht_5180wt_1139"]Cisco 3640 w/ CallManager Express CME CCVP Lab Router | eBay[/ame]

We just so happen to have one of these in the spare parts bin sitting there collecting dust. Now I know it clearly says "w/ CallManager Express" in the add, but I need to ask just to make sure because I know ebay ads can be misleading. And since I dont really have any experience with this hardware I need to make sure before I go setting it up.

Will this device allow me to setup a few Cisco IP phones and make some basic internal phone calls?

Thanks!

Ok I am sure it will work. That said you need access to the CCO to get the software you are talking about. I do not know versions of the top of my head but you are going to have to make sure all the software supports what you want it to do. Other then that I do not see an issue with this. That said this will make a full CCME environment be it limited in some aspects over a server based CUCM environment but yeah it will be able to make calls interact with phones etc etc. if I understand it correctly you want to intercept phone calls to record them or more work like a plugin into the call manager ?

As for hardware more flash and more memory is always welcome the requirements are higher then normal routing use of course.

Cisco voip?

Shouldn't it be SCCP or SIP? Are your customers not using communications manager?

Yes they can/do. Its not always required for us to record. But what I'm trying to do is setup a lab for our software here in the office so I dont have a full blown setup.

We can record IP phones with a generic driver and a packet sniffer which covers most vendors. We use IP phones in the office and I was hoping to record those. But after I ran a wireshark on them its unclear if our software will see their traffic as a voice stream. They use DIS protocol rather than UDP or RTP.

So for the sake of setting up a primitive lab I was going to try to setup a small very basic Call Manager just so I can make some internal calls. Obviously I wont be able to make incoming/outgoing calls.

SCCP and SIP are used for call control not that actual audio stream.

OP, I am not sure why you are seeing DIS traffic. The audio stream should still be transmitted by RTP over UDP. It has been several years since I worked with a Cisco IP telephony systems so things may have changed though.

We're not using Cisco IP at the office. This is the whole reason I need to create a makeshift one :D

Why the Packet8 phones produce a DIS stream? Beats me. Must be proprietary.

All that's required is the CME (which you showed above.)

Depending on hardware and licensing you can register anywhere from 24 - 150 phones on a CME.

You'll need a switch capable of mirroring or SPAN'g a port. This will provide you your path for the interface of the recording software, to take a sample of every voice packet.

Is there a default license built in? How many phones can register? 24?

Span port has been setup that's how I found out the packet8 phones use the dis protocol.

Not sure about CME but CUCM comes with 50 license units. Now units are depended on phones so for example a 7942 use 4 units per phone but a SIP third party advanced setup takes 6 or even a 7985 uses 6 units where like a 7912 takes only 2 units etc. Extra features again change these values.
