has anyone used these? I was thinking of getting one to get some cisco experience, and keeping my linksys as a backup. they arent terribly expensive used, and some even have a built in cable modem.

All of those UBRs have a modem built into them as well. Call you ISP, and see if it will work on their network before you get one. I got one, and becuase of incompatibility problems with my ISPs cable network I can't use it even though they are DOCSIS compliant. I think you would be better off getting a 2514, or one of the SOHO 800 series routers if you want something to play with.

I just notices something...the ubrs and the 2514 are 10mbps routers, but that doesnt matter since my cable connection is only 3mbps. I never thought about that, but it doesnt matter since its over tripple my bandwidth.

My ideal uBR router would be one with 3 ethernet interfaces. WAN, LAN, DMZ. Does such a thing exist in the reasonably priced range? probably not. But it's nice to think about.
