I can get a Cisco Catalyst 3548XL Enterprise Edition Switch for around $60. I have a cheap 8 port switch in my basement right now but I have 2 cat5e runs to each room in the house and it would be nice to have them all hooked up instead of moving cables around when a different spot is needed. I know nothing about this switch. Would there be any drawbacks or added difficulties using it over a smaller switch? I can handle some noise since it will be in a utility room. Thanks

It would work great. A little much, but that's not a big deal! :) It's loud with the fans, but since it's in a utility room, it will be fine. I'd say for for it. :) It is a decent (yet older model) switch.

I guess it might not be as good a deal as I thought. When I was looking for a 24 port or greater switch they all seemed to cost a couple hundred. Thanks for the info

that was a great switch 10 years ago. if you're not going to be setting vlans or anything I'd just buy a nice unmanaged 24-port gigabit switch,

Old, loud and sucks energy all for 10/100 speeds. Great for learning Cisco stuff - not so much for a home switch unless you need to do vlans, etc.
