Does this router work with an APC UPS unit that provides power in a "stepped approximation of a sine wave" manner? Or do I need to shell out the big bucks for a SmartUPS unit?

Just FYI, it's a switch, not a router.

I don't know the answer to your question though. What is "stepped approximation of a sine wave"?!

I don't see any issue with running it on a modified sine wave.

I haven't ran that exact model on a back-ups, but I know I've ran several other Cisco devices without issue, unlike my hp server...

Oops, used the wrong term. This is good to know, I jumped on the Office Depot deal on Black Friday and wanted to see if it would work with this Cisco switch. I'm going to hook up my router, modem, and switch all on one UPS.

I kow my computers wouldn't work very well on the Back UPS models because APFC PSUs must have UPSes that have exact sine wave power...

You should be fine, but like mentioned, HP servers can be a real PITA...
