Hi,

I am running a Cisco 3548 48 port switch with IOS Version 12.0(5)WC17XL (latest)

I have decided to put in a 1000Mb Base-T backbone in for my home servers and connect them to the Switch via a WS-G5483 module.

The problem I have got is that the switch does not see the module (I have 2 and tried both in both ports on the switch)

This is what I get from the switch

Code:
GigabitEthernet0/1 is down, [b]line protocol is down[/b]
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 0003.e3e7.23b1 (bia 0003.e3e7.23b1)
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
     reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
  Keepalive not set
  Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, [b]media type is missing[/b]
output flow-control is off, input flow-control is off
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 01:05:21, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
  Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops
  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
7 packets input, 448 bytes, 0 no buffer
     Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
     0 watchdog, 0 multicast, 0 pause input
     7 packets output, 448 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 9 interface resets
     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 pause output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

no you can't set the media type manually. I'll get the show run in an hour or so.

Thanks.

I have set no shutdown on the port it comes up for a second then goes back down again.

I will get the info tomorrow. Thanks for the help!!

Jay,
Sorry buddy but those 5483's are junk. Out of all the ones I've seen/used, like 25% of them actually worked.

Sadly I would have to say you have bad gbic's.

Shoot me a PM if you need anything else.

I'd agree, bad gbic, or try another port. I have several of those in use and your switch should at least be able to identify it, which it isn't.
