Cisco 1841?

Well it's been a crazy week for me thus far so I have not even had time to pick up the console cable and books.

Monday I hope to go to this computer recycler around the corner from me and see what he has laying around.

I am also in the process of setting up my computer lab at my other house. I would like to set up a site to site encrypted VPN between the 2 locations. I am under the impression the 1841 can do this on one end. If so can anyone recommend some options for the other end? Actually the location I am at now has a crap internet connection and a rather small network so the 1841 will probably be going with me and a lesser device installed here if possible.

Also unless I miss understood something while browsing the Cisco documents on the 1841, it seems to support an AIM's modual that would handle the VPN encryption? If so any idea what I would expect to pay for something like that?

Anyway it's all quite over kill for my “needs” I am sure but as soon as I get some free time next week the learning experience will start. Not to mention I love my toys. I suspect it wont be long before the rack I am installing at my new house ends up with a stack of Cisco equipment. I had been debating getting Cisco certs for over a year now and finally decided I am going to do it.

I do IT work for a few very small not for profit organizations and with some Cisco certs maybe I will feel comfortable taking on some larger jobs. I also know some people who have been telling me if I get my CCNA they will help me get a internship where they work so it may not be a total waste of time.

I just know that right now I have a lot to learn but at least I seem to have a place to start.

Anything that supports IPsec, literally. Ive used about 6 different devices terminating my end points.(ranging from DD-WRT to pfsense)

Why does every pluralize the AIM module? WTF... my customer does it too, lol:D I digress, you do NOT need an AIM module for VPN...if you do decide to use the AIM it will do all encrypt/decrypt in hardware, otherwise you're NP is doing all those duties.

Not sure alot of us fit the normal bill of users.. I don't have much room either. I use a pix 506 as my main firewall to the lab at home.. As soon as I can get a watchguard and install pfsense on it the 506 will be retired
 
Cool I will just leave this network as is with the pfsense box and HP managed switch, just adding the VPN to it.

The 1841 will come with me to the new home and dedicated computer room. I still have close to 30days before the DSL is hooked up at the new house so I have a bit of time to figure this thing out.
 
Ok guys I don’t want to get in to the issues I had with my “friend” who was suppose to help me out with a cable, books, and guidance on getting this 1841 setup. Let me just say it never happened and with other things going on the 1841 has been sitting in the corner.

Anyway last night I couldn’t sleep so I pulled up the cisco website and found a pin out for the console cable and built one. I then followed instructions for replacing the passwords and restoring the system to factory defaults.

Everything went well but that just means I can follow instructions. I haven’t got a clue when it comes to configuring this router to talk to my DSL modem much less configuring the firewall for my needs. The geek in me really wants to learn how to work with cisco gear. But at the same time I know I will probably never touch another piece of cisco kit so it hardly seems worth it.

So I have to ask, is it really that hard or do I just need to find the right way to get started? I felt a bit more confident before, thinking I had someone who could come over and explain things to me when I got lost to get me back on track. And here I am now failing to find a guide that would explain configuring one of the interfaces to talk to my pppoe DSL modem Can I buy a book that will walk me through things and break down the structure and commands for me? I don’t think I have ever felt so lost when it comes to a piece of computer hardware before. It’s rather frustrating.
 
Yeah I guess that’s what he was going to give me from when he took the exam but I never even got to look at his books. I just want sure the exam books were the best way to go.

I will probably order the book online and have to wait for it to ship. So I have to ask does anyone know of a guide that walks you through configuring IOS for home DSL? Not sure if it matters what version of IOS it has but I will have to check since I don’t remember from last night and didn’t write it down.

I guess I could plug in the laptop and post the boot up report or whatever if it’s needed.
 
To get a really basic config set up, you need to be able to assign ips to interfaces, configure nat and set a password. That book will do it, but I'm sure google has answers for you too :)
 
Well I had actually figured some of that out when I restored it to factory defaults. What I got seriously stuck on was the pppoe.

I just found a guide on DSL reports that uses the 2514 but I think it should give me a place to start while I wait on books.

Anyway I checked out the terminal. It looks like it’s an 1841 revision 5 running IOS 12.4.
 
I have a 1841 running at home as well. It has a DSL WIC in it now, but here's how you would do it without one.
Hook the FE0/0 to the DSL modem
FE0/1 goes to the switch
If your modem is bridged(most likely) then you'd have to setup the Cisco to to the PPPoE stuff
Here's the PPPoE section of my config, and you might be able to base yours off of it. The ATM interface is my DSL card.

Be nice to say I had something better to do last night but yeah so not really wasting any time. Learning IOS and then only using it to occasionally make changes to my home router will be wasted knowledge I guess.

The hardware will be wasted in the fact that no one has done anything to improve service in my area. FIOS stopped way short and Verizon has to bring it through a city that’s falling apart still before it gets to me. Without a big move it would be years before the 1841 would see a really connection.

So yes I am playing with it now mostly to decide if I should part with it. I could use some other hardware more then I really need the 1841. But if I don’t take this chance to get some understanding of Cisco and IOS I probably won’t get another.

But yes it’s PPPoE, the modem is about 15 years old now and my service has only gone up in speed one in those 15 years. I have been using a pfsense box for awhile now but recently made some changes and had to go back to an old consumer grade router since I no longer have room for the old box. The 1841 would just fit in the cabinet but I have other plans anyway.

The big problem I had was I would ? but seen no PPPoE command but it took it anyway. I haven’t hooked up the switch and modem to test the configuration yet and I think I will compare it to the one Jeff gave before I do.

And Jeff getting a DSL WIC and eliminating my modem is one of the things that appeals most to me about the 1841. But I am also so sick of Verizon doing nothing to improve network performance in my area that I am about to move to the only other game in town as much as I hate Comcast.
 
You might also look for a program called SDM. It's from Cisco. It gives you a nice GUI interface to conifg routers
