cisco 1841 help

Ok so i just got a 1841 and i have nfc where to start on hwo to set it up or make it work. How do i go about loging in to it so i can set it up to use it as a router? I tried to plug my pc in to the consle port and my pc doesn't even show i have any thing hooked up to it. so any step by step guides on how to log in and set this up?
 
do you have hyperterminal downloaded and installed? If not get it run it create new connection com1 speed 9600.

when i tried that it says unable to open connection to com 1 unable to open serial port. and when i try it form my old win xp box it just times out and doesn't connect what port should i have my cat 5 plugged in to i have axu, console and two others
 
As stated above, you will need a console cable (serial --> RJ45). If you are poor / un-lazy you can make your own http://www.ossmann.com/5-in-1.html.

Connect the console port to your serial port, fire up hyperterm / putty / whatever tool you want to use, and open a connection on com1 9600 8N1

Press enter a few times and you should see "Do you want to enter initial setup" or a Router> prompt.

Going through the basic setup will get you up and running in most casees, but you will need to do some reading on how to optimize / secure / use / get the most out of your hardware for your specific use case.

ICND1/2, Network Warrior, Cisco Cookbook, CCNA command guide, and a basic network+ book is a good starting point.
 
Also, your COM port won't always be COM1, it is best to check which COM ports you have available in Device Manager (if Windows) and go from there.

what do i do whit this i never used a cisco before and have nfc waht im doing soem oen gave me this router and i just want to play around whit it make it work so far its just very aggravating

I would suggest you figure out if you really want to learn Cisco routing or not. If you don't then sell that thing on eBay. If you do, then I would suggest you read up networking fundamentals and read the configuration guide I linked to earlier.

Honestly, that's a pretty crappy config. But it should get you started. If you don't even know where to enter it, get a book. No one is going to walk you through every step.
 
People pay money to learn how to use Cisco equipment.

Speaking of money, I'll give you $25 for it if you dont want it :)
 
nice to see this is the ebay thread now lol any way that being said i would like to get this to work because its a lot more [H] to have this thing powering your network then some pos that resets it self all the time......anyway will a going form serial to usb work this would be a lot easier to work on if i could use my main pc which doesn't have a serial port on it.
 
yeah, just make sure you buy a serial->usb adapter with one of the more common chipsets (Prolific PL-2303 or something similar)

I got mine on ebay for about $8 shipped.
 
fucking a i think i got im posting this form my pc behind it and my speed test went form 8mps to 18.66 im try moving big files form my storage pc to my other pcs to see if the net work stays up unlike my other one which would reset after about 10 mim.btw how do i save this config so that next time it resets it will keep it?
 
thanks for all the help so far [H] i just put sdm on it and so far this stuff is fun to play whit:) anyway quick quest is there any way to turn the ethernet port card wic 1dsu-t1v2 to act like a regular lan port?

You got yourself a nice little toy with that 1841

I would just buy another addin card off ebay that has more ethernet ports.

You won't need a card like this for your router, but this is the type of things those WIC slots can do. Getting into networking gear is super fun, lots you can do with hardware and the Cisco IOS

Go buy the CCNA books off Amazon and start reading. You won't regret it if you are enjoying playing with that 1841
 
any one have one of the 4 ports or a wireless card i can buy or trade off them? i have a cisco c2924 xl and a dlink 1024d and a bunch of laptop parts
