I primary game @1920x1200 and I'm not happy with the performance of a single 6970 overclocked, I'm wondering if I should get a second one or if I should sell this one and look at an alternative.

I think the 670 would be great but for the price the 7970s go for now I would rather have the VRAM encase I need it for mods (Skyrim etc)

Would SLI 660Ti's be valid?

I'm looking for a little more than double the performance of a single 6970

I tried crossfired 6970's for a while but I think a single GPU solution works best, especially at the 1920x1200 at which I also play.

The 7970 is nearly twice as fast as a 6970, though I'm holding out for the 8970 which is rumored to be available sometime in March, and should be a bit faster for the roughly the same price.

Yeah I wasn't sure if I should hold out or just grab a 7970 nearly twice isn't enough power I'm afraid.

a 7970 was only about 35-40% faster than a 6970 at launch. unless it has magically more than doubled its original performance with newer drivers then it is no where near twice as fast as the 6970.

7970's are not quite double the performance but almost if you can overclock it to GHZ level.

I'd defintely stick with one card than 2.

even the ghz card on the newest drivers is only getting about 60% faster overall average at 1920 than the stock 6970. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/23.html

plus if the op overclocks then he would have the 6970 oced too. that said, I would also not fool with two cards and just get a 7970 that is known to oc pretty well.

I also agree with the others in going the single card route instead of SLI/Xfire, but you may have to wait for next gen cards to see if they can give you the performance levels you are looking for (>2X 6970).

I guess waiting it out will have to be the solution because a 690 is out of the question.

why not simply get a 7970 and oc it? that will easily give you 75% more performance than a stock 6970. that makes more sense then just waiting around for 6 more months for a card that may not be much faster than the 7970 and costs quite a bit more.
