I'm currently working on spec'ing out some new hardware for a DR site that will eventually become a primary (active) datacenter. Currently running on NetApp (FAS 2050 and FAS2020), but considering other storage vendors. We want to do storage replication with SRM, over IPSEC VPN (100Mb WAN).
Anything in particular to be looking for? I'm looking into NetApp, Dell Equalogic, and EMC VNX storage for the most part.

Currently using 4Gb FC (brocade bladecenter switch modules), and considering making the move to 10Gb iSCSI, any recommendations when it comes to 10Gb copper? I'm mostly looking at HP as we currently use HP ZL chassis.
 
Get another NetApp and do array-based replication. It's going to work a lot better than the Host-Based Replication in vSphere/SRM.

Heh..I'd be trying to sell them two EMC arrays..but if you are set on keeping the NetApp (just bought it..love it..whatever) buy another one. Don't get different arrays. Do array replication and use SRM with that. Just easier and far more capable.

definitely doing SAN based replication, we're trying to decide if we're going to stay Netapp and buy another FAS filer, or if we'd move to EMC, or equalogic or something. I do like the VNX series, but EMC has really dropped the ball on communication, it's been nearly 2 weeks and they still haven't got a sales engineer I can talk to. Certainly will factor in the (lack of) pre sales support on my decision.

NetApp really showed they are stepping up their game at vmworld this week. really impressed with what they are going to be bringing to the table. Also they are one of the few SAN vendors to be fully supported w/VAAI and vmware.
 
Tintri has no replication right now.

What did NetApp show that was new and exciting?

They won out the VMworld Challenge against Cisco, EMC, HP and Dell... I have no idea what it was but

To the OP, the big problem that you'll run into is that the FAS2020 is limited to DOT 7.3.1 (I'm 99% sure on this), so even if you wanted to run this in your recovery site then you'll be forced to run this same version in your production site. Make note the 2050 doesn't have the same limitation (it can run DOT 8) so you will have to limit your storage capabilities (i.e. VAAI) just to have snapmirror work. May not be a bad time to re-asses your storage, at bare minimum to the point of taking the 2020 out the equation.
 
yup, the 2020 is slated for being decommissioned, we might just bump up the time frame on that. if we change vendors, we'll be replacing all of the NetApp filers, or using them as pre production environment storage (for which we don't need to worry about replication to the other DC). Also worth mentioning the FAS2020 isn't used in the VMware environment, it's shared LUNS for a physical SQL enterprise cluster.

Hahaha. Yeah, recommend them due to a vote at a keynote. :). They showed live data migration. BFD. Based on those presos I'd never buy a Cisco product again! Awful.

But man that cisco presentation was trash. Almost could hear the collective groan and forced barely applause.

Not at all.

Everyone using ABR is also using HBR. Not everyone using HBR is using ABR.

But that's beside the point. It was something else entirely. ;)
