Im looking to upgrade from my current 9600 pro, and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for new cards to go for. I consider myself a pretty frequent gamer (running Doom 3, HL2, etc) and looking to spend around the $300 range max. Also, what kind of specific differences are there between

1. ATI vs nvidia
2. AGP vs PCI express x16

also i see that DDR3 is mentioned with the x800s, is this something new, or should i be fine with my dual 512 3200 XMS's. I know this is a lot to ask in a single post, but any and all help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

gddr3 is the actual memory on the video card. It has nothing to do with system memory.
