choosing a VGA cable...

I believe I am having problems with my VGA cabling.

My original setup involved a thick VGA cable (without the cylindrical ferrites on them) running to a VGA input switch. The other input to the switch is a game console. Then the switch feeds my monitor. This setup has worked fine with a Win98 computer on an a 19in CRT monitor Circa 2004. Also worked fine for my new computer build with the same CRT.

Moved to a 20inch AOC 2019Vwa1 monitor. 1680x1050.

With the integrated graphic card and output hardware, and a new ATI HD4830 card, I was getting faint "astigmatism" or "ripples" going to the right of any thin vertical color line, and from the left side of the pane, which were vertical lines. Some text was affected also.

Looking for the source of the problem, I switched my old computer feed vga cable out and fed the Monitor's included cable directly to the monitor. Solved the issue, no more lines. Keeping the cable in place, I set up the original setup, and now only have a faint "astigmatism" or "ripple" verticle line from the left side of the display.

So - it seems I lost alot of signal quality from the original cable, and now I am loosing some signal quality from either the total length of the signal now, or a signal lose introduced by the switch and or cable from switch to monitor. The Xbox side of the switch seemed fine, but its is hard to duplicate thin vertical lines with backgraouds to easily see them. (going from VGA-CRT to 1860x1050-VGA on an Xbox is absolutely stunning - I always thought there was little difference)

SO......

How do I pick out a VGA cable to use? Online I see different kinds of UXGA cables (which seemingly best applies for my display resolution) and SVGA cables. But, I have never seen any sort of notice, or warning on any product that suggests a certain type of VGA cable. None of my cables are labeled svga or uxga or anything, not even the new cable with the monitor (which could still be some cheap part and not appropriate). They could all be uxga cables with gold wires and I would never know.

What do I need? I believe there is an issue with the cables, but there can also be an issue with the switch. I am doubtful that the card output is the issue as it occurred with he integrated graphic card and motherboard vga hardware, AND the new card. Has the rave for low power lately moved to lower signal output power also? While my problem is now barely noticeable, I would still like for it to go away as the problem may be elsewhere in the display and I just do not notice it for now.
