I'm starting a new build and I'm a bit clueless of what processor would be decent for overclocking. My budget is roughly 100-150$, and I don't plan on any extreme overclocking. It's going to be mainly used for gaming. Oh, and what features should I look into with a motherboard if I'm going to overclock.
 
i spent 60 dollars on my AMD Athlon II X2 250 @ 3.0ghz and I now have it sitting at 3.75GHZ @ 1.45V

I say that's a pretty good overclocker for so little money. My 2 cents!

By the way, I have the A880G+ Motherboard
 
With that budget AMD is your best choice

You should wait a little while till there is a good selection of AM3+ motherboards. AMD is coming out with a new line of cpus (sometime) that will use it so you should buy a motherboard that is AM3+ and a cheapo current AMD cpu if you can't afford more (so you can upgrade cpu in the future without having to buy a new motherboard).
 
Honestly for that amount of money you can get used stuff or go to microcenter and get an Amd processor with free motherboard combo. Honestly if you want to overlook any motherboard will do some very basic overclockng of a few hundred mhz or so as long as your base clock or multiplier is not fully locked.
 
+1 on the go-to-microcenter.

Microcenter has the 2500K for $179.99. But right now if you buy a sandy bridge chip and mobo together, you get $40 off..which would bring the processor down to $139.99 - right in your budget. Further, because it's a 2500 "K" it has an unlocked multiplier and you can OC to your heart's content :).

Alternatively, Fry's has the 2500K for $179.99 as well but you would be stretching your budget for that one - since they don't have the $40 off deal.
 
I was actually planning to go to microcenter initially. I was originally planning to go with the 2500K, but wasn't aware of the discount. I think I'll look into that. If not, I might wait for the new lineup for amd so the prices can go down.

EDIT: Could you give me a link where it has that discount? I can't seem to find it now...

I got it in an email from microcenter. it's b&m only and it says prices good 7/1 to 7/3 so you'd need to jump on it soon. it just says:

"$4​0 OFF ANY Intel Compatible Motherboar​d with the purchase of a 2nd Generation Intel Core Processor"

and then they listed their regular processor prices

i3 2100 $100

and then they gave some "example bundles" you can create..but really you can pick whatever combination you want i don't see any exceptions listed anywhere.
 
If you get a Intel Sandy chip try if you can to score a Z68 board. Not sure if you can swing that in your budget at all, but it will be really nice to encode video with Quicksync if you are interested in that. Also SSD caching is supposed to be okay.

I do not use quicksync as much anymore since I found that my AMD GPU is just as fast and im too lazy to fire up the old 2500K box sometimes.
