Hi all! My Logitech G5 SE (blue) has served me well for the last several years. I love having the two thumb buttons. That has made a large difference in games as well as every day use like web surfing. I noticed the braided cord is starting to fray. The mouse felt a bit sluggish lately, so I cleaned off the feet and used a cotton swab with alcohol to clean off the sensor, which made it work closer to new. I also installed the latest Setpoint, which also helped a lot. Oddly, my really old Setpoint never told me there was an update. I was literally using version 4.x while the latest is 6.x.
It's time to find a replacement. I didn't realize how much the "gaming mouse" market had grown in just a few years! There are so many options. As my last few mice have been Logitechs in the MX518 style shape, I took a look at what's available from them. I've never used a wireless mouse, but I like the idea. The G700 looks fairly similar in shape to my G2. Plus, all the extra buttons would be fun to use. I don't know that I truly need that many buttons, but I'm sure I could find a use for them. I've read about some tracking issues when doing very small, precise movements, but that seems to happen to a minority of owners. I also read the mouse has built-in acceleration that cannot be disabled. I'm not sure how that would affect my use or if I'd even care.
The R.A.T. 7 and 9 look pretty crazy, but upon researching, I like the idea of them. The red "sniper" button is a great idea. But can you emulate it using macros on other mice? The 9 is a bit too pricey at $130+. The 7 is more reasonable at close to $80. Being able to customize the pinky, thumb, and palm grips is awesome. The weight system seems nice as I have that on my G2. I don't like that Mad Cats' warranty is so short at only 90 days. Logitech gives you 3 years and Razer gives you 2.
Razer has a few interesting mice. The Mamba 2012 looks great. It has a very similar setup to my current G2 (minus scroll wheel left and right). I like that it's wireless and seems to have good battery life. The LEDs are cool, but it's not really something I care about. I've read about "lift-off" tracking issues, but as I don't lift my mouse up, I don't think that would affect me. The price is rather steep at $120. I'd prefer to spend $99 or less. The Imperator 2012 also looks great. Having tried a Deathadder in a store back when I got the G2, I loved the rubberized texture and the finger scoops in the main mouse buttons. It also has the same button layout as the G2 (minus scroll wheel left and right).
Just for info, I tend to use a grip between fingertip and palm. My palm usually hangs off the back of the mouse. I play several FPS (TF2) and RTS (SC2) mostly.
I suppose I'll head out to Best Buy and see what they have in stock. I have a feeling I'll try the G700 first.
Thanks for reading this novella. Any thoughts, questions, comments are appreciated! Thank you!
