I've been torn between the the Apple CD 23", HP L2335, Viewsonic vp231wb. All three use the same panel. The only one I've seen is the Apple. It's sharp at .258 but it just doesn't look right. I'm not sure if the Apple is representative of the other two panels but it's the only one I've seen. Lately I've also considered the 2405fpw. The reviews are great. And the specs on the panel are impressive as well. But the cheap price and reported quality of Dell LCD's has me cautious.

I've also read this review http://www.behardware.com/articles/567/page2.html and it compares the vp231wb, HP FP 2304( Uses the same panel as the L2335) and 2405fpw. Apparently the colors of the 2405fpw are great and that is what is most important to me. But the sharpness is also an issue.

Is there a signifigant difference between a pitch of .258 and a pitch of .270. Will I even notice coming from a .264? Also, how frequent are backlight bleeding issues and the buzzing sound? Are there a lot of dead pixel instances? And how difficult is the RMA process if I have these quality issues or dead pixels? I know this monitor is priced low, but I'm wondering if I'm getting what I'm paying for, something cheaply priced therefore cheaply built.

But I'm confused. This article (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/ot...d-guide_27.html) on the differences between panel technologies say's that the S-IPS panel in the L2335 and vp231wb is better for color reproduction and games. It's weak point being the display of blacks and contrast.

It say's that the MVA panel in the 2405fpw is bad at playing games due to it's slow response time and it doesn't produce colors very well. It's strong points are it's high contrast ratio, deep blacks and viewing angles.

I'm still trying to decide which I should go for. When I read the review on the great color of the 2405fpw. I figured that would be the one. But the article on panel technologies has made me iffy. The L2335 has gotten some great reviews too from forum members and other review sites. It's also the cheapest of LCD's using the S-IPS panel. The Apple is out of the questions seeing how it doesn't support SLI. Which I may want later in the future. The vp231wb has the best design in my opinion with it's thin black bezel and 4 USB ports. Video connections aren't important to me as I'll only have the LCD connected to my computer.

And can someone explain "Twinkling effect" and "Afterglow?"
 
The X-Bit article is to general as it focuses on general LCD technology and doenst go into the specific advantages of each specific manufactures panels.

Its a good general read but I wouldnt base buying decisions on simply the technology behind each panel...

I'd compare the specific panels myself vs the other specific panels.

Its naive to assume that all MVA or PVA panels are created equal...as they're clearly not.
 
To say that a panel is good for games and at the same time good for colors, and yet bad at contrast and blacks is absurd (to me). Please correct me if I am wrong (with proof), but contrast/blacks are rather directly linked to color reproduction (necessary, really), and all of these are what is sacrificed in order to improve a panels response time for games/motion. Also, I'm not sure that pixel pitch on an LCD has anything to do with sharpness, as it would on a CRT. Your pixels are square and distinct, regardless of the pitch, because you are always at your native resolution (as far as physical pixels, which does not change with input resolution).

The review from http://www.behardware.com/articles/567/page1.html about 2405 is a perfect accurate except the video part (I don't play game so I can't comment about the game).

It is true, when you play DVD, or Divx video in full screen, the picture looks terrible. But when I download the 1080p format video from Microsoft WMVHD web site and play it on this monitor, holily sh!t!!! I was shocked by the picture quality, it is amazing and incredibly clear, detailed and vivid. It is the video out put resolution makes the BIG difference.

The low cost of the 2405fpw isn't a bad thing at all. It's just that I've heard stuff about backlight leaking and sagging mounts and such and it makes me wonder if it's priced so low because it's not as well built.

I can imagine that viewing a dvd at full screen would result in a terrible movie due to the upscaling of the movie. So that's no surprise there. But the review indicated to me that it was poor at displaying motion. But if it is indeed smooth then that is a bonus.

I'm leaning more toward the 2405fpw currently. I know I'll be happy with either the 2405fpw or vp231wb. Just wan't to make the best decision I can. It's a shame that I can't have the two side by side. The deciding process would be easier.
 
Backlight leakage is a problem with 2005, not 2405.. As for saggin stand - it's just the design, since it can rotate to portrait mode, and rotating 24" monster aint easy as 17" or 19" LCDs, so the weight can pull down it a little to one side. However again, it's not a widespread problem, most users won't even notice it. The true problem with 2405 is that it's too bright and colors can look washed out when u first plug it in. U need to tweak colors and gamma a bit to achieve best color reproduction.

I just pushed the button and ordered the 2405fpw. Thanks for the information guys. Let's hope it arrives with every pixel in tact and trouble free.

It was $1040 after 20% rebate and tax.
