Okay, so I have the system in my sig and I wanna get better res in Doom3 so Im upgrading my video card. I can either get a used 9800pro 256bit 128mb for $228USD or a brand new Leadtek 6800 for $300USD. I really dont intend to upgrade till the next half-life comes out (meaning Half-Life 3 !!!!!!) so I wanna know which card would last longer in the long run, meaning which one would be able to handle all the games to come till the next big game?

I can't really say either of those cards will last until HL3 (you realize how long between HL and HL2? ) but the 6800 is definately going to last longer than the 9800pro.

edit- that's what I call forward thinking...looking ahead to a sequel to a game that hasn't been released yet. :p

Definitely the 6800nu. The 6800nu is much faster and it has support for SM 3.0 which will be used in future games. They overclock really well as well and if you will a little research, people have been able to soft mod them to 16 pipes using RivaTuner. You'll just have to find out which ones are soft moddable because if you dont get the right one you'll be stuck with 4 dead pipes. Ither way, you'll get a kickass card.

I would consider laying down the extra 100 and getting teh 6800GT model. The GT is significantly faster, and while HL3 is a loooong ways away, the GT will probably ourlast the 6800 by about 4 or 5 months. But the 6800 is way better than the 9800 Pro hands down without a question.

Alrighty, thnx for the help guys...also, should I consider getting a new more powerful PSU to get more poswer to the card along with the other components? If so, i might as well upgrade the whole bloody comp too, hehe

Thnx for the help guys!

I thought this didn't work out cause the creator of Riva is on vacation and delayed the version of RV that enables this? Also, i heard it gives artifacts and tearing?

We'll have to wait until the 'Tuner comes out, and for some folks to test the success on different brands of cards to see which tend to give the best/most reliable results.

And don't upgrade the whole computer right now; wait a year or more.

I just ordered an MSI 6800 "Vanillia" and should be here next week. As for the softmodding, I've heard that it really depends on which card you get because a lot of the "Vanilla" cores are the same as the GT and Ultra, but have the pipes disabled because they are malfunctioning or cannot function up to spec.

I've also heard that even enabling all 16 pipes doesn't affect performance because of the DDR (not GDDR or DDR3) that the "vanilla" card uses....

maybe I don't understand how this works but...how can a softmod permanently damage your card? I can see a bios flash or volt mods causing problems but it seems that this would be just as reversable as an overclock.

It won't really damage it, RivaTuner just hasn't figured out yet how to turn the pipes back off, thats all.

I didn't mean that it would permantly damage your card. I just meant you might buy a 6800 in hopes of have a 16 pipeline card and it turns out the 4 extra pipes dont work.

Oh, ok...then it sounds like a "can't lose with chance of big payoff" option to get a nu.. I hope there's other goodies for people with GT's/Ultra's in the new version.

Okay, just got a LeadTek 6800ngt/u for aobut $290USD without taxes and shipping...hopefully it will be here monday, and hopefully this will be the card that will last 2 years...

Probably a good choice on the Leadtek. I would say MSI or Leadtek are the best of the vanilla 6800's right now, with improved all copper cooling designs that allow some great oc's.

I will be picking one up myself in about a week ;)

Wow, I just read about the 6600's and the SLI and boy do I feel stupid...I am kinda regretting my purchase, but I take refuge in the fact that I dont have PCI-E. But then again, they do plan on releasing the card on AGP afterwards...

And agp will NOT have SLI, so don't worry about it.
