Im gonna feel like a little kid posting this when comparing it to everyones x800/6800GT/U posts.. Im looking to buy a new card, and I dont wanna dish out the cash for the this gen cards, and I've been lookin at the MSI 9800 Pro and the ATi 9800 Pro.. The price difference is very little, the MSI being about $30 cheaper. Whats the difference in the two? This is the MSI version and this is the ATi version .
I can price match the ATi to be roughly $312 shipped, or I can get the MSI $305 shipped.. (This is in that crazy Canadian currency.) But yeah, I've never used MSI before, so I really dont know what the difference is, if there is a difference. Any help would be appreciated.
 
The only difference is the bundle it comes with, the MSI probably comes with some games, whereas the ATI just comes with the card and some cables/ driver cd. Just depends on how much you feel like spending. Built By ATI = probably better quality, MSI = better game bundle

You sure the msi has an 256 bit memory interface? if its just 128 bit I think thats why its cheaper
 
People are saying its the 256-bit bus card, not the watered down 128bit card. And by probably better quality, how so? ie more stable? possible higher overclocks? Thats generally why I always had purchased the ATi cards, because it just seems like they would be better quality wise, but I never took the time to stop and think about what the better quality would be.

Oh yeah, I also remember seeing somewhere that you can flash the r360 9800 Pros to be an XT card, anyone know if this MSI has the r360 core? Or maybe even the ATi one?
 
That MSI has the R360 core, how do i know? i read alot of reviews at newegg and other sites :p . If you are wanting to flash the 9800 pro to a XT id say go with the MSI 98% of people recieve the R360 core.
 
Ok, after reading a bit more on the NCIX forums, people are having questions about if you do successfully flash it to an XT card, will that effect the cooling? Because the Pro and XT coolers are different.. Would there be a chance of it overheating with stock Pro cooling if it was flashed to XT?
 
If you want to flash it to XT i'd recommend better cooling, like an ati silencer or something. Overheating could be an issue because when you flash the card that raises the clock speeds meaning it produces more heat. You could get away with using stock cooling but i'd recommend something better.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I've been looking at the Newegg game bundle it comes with, and its different from the one NCIX has, but both sets of photos may be outdated.. I'd want the newegg one for Prince of Persia and XIII, they seem like cool games, the bundle that is in the photo for NCIX is like, Duke Nukem somethin or other, Ghost Recon, and Morrowind.. lol.
I'll probably pick up the card next week or so, might go on sale.
 
I think you should save up for a 6800 vanilla its a great buy and the performace is far superior to the 9800 or FX5900
 
When do the 6800's bottleneck? Im hearing that 3ghz P4's arent enough for the X800pros and 6800GTs, and I've only got a 2.4, thats why I was leaning towards a 9800Pro, it would be a nice gain compared to my 9600XT, and I know it isnt bottlenecked.
