Chkdsk's memory usage: 7 gb?

II'm running chkdsk to scan for bad sectors and it's using 7 gb of memory. Is this normal?
Chkdsk also requires a drive to be mounted. Is there a better way to scan for bad sectors?
 
Something is very wrong there. OS Version, patch level, boot volume, volume being checked?
 
I think Microsoft said it was by design, to speed up checking. You can google "chkdsk high ram usage" and find a bunch of articles about it.
