when i run chkdsk (under command or run) it does a lot more now then it use to in old OSs.

someone told me its the same things as analize under defrag but i dont agree with him, i have seen chkdsk fix index errors in winxp. anyone wish to enlighten me on the difference of chkdsk and analize under defrag?

thanks.

no, it is not the same thing as running chkdsk /f. which should be done periodically. if you issue this on the sys drive you will need to reboot. do not worry about minor inconsistencies and clean ups. do worry about other file system errors. non sys drive will not need a reboot, usually, and will not generate inconsistencies as much.

personally, i run chkdsk /f about one or two weeks of passed time. sometimes, i do it at whim. usually, though after a chkdsk /f on a drive i defrag after it. note: i have never had a hard drive fail on me-period. not even a bad sector in my 11 years of pc-at. my western digital 40 meg pio-0 drive was still kicking and i was sad to toss it.

awesome thanks for sharing the knowledge..

hit run - type "cmd or command" - and just type it there. although if your going to chkdsk /f on the drive your os is on it will just schedual a chkdsk for next time you restart.
