Chipset getting ridiculously hot

My video card is so big that it blocks the chipset fan from proper cooling. I've had it at 60c when idle. I know the next revision of the board fixes this problem but that is in October :(

Is there anything I can do to keep it cooled down? At the moment I have a floor fan blowing into the case. It's at 45c right now but it sounds like an airport in my room.
 
dfi chipsets run quite hot.. most people ive seen on dfi-street get somewhere between 35-50 degrees idle. when i oc'd before, my chipset was about 46 idle, 54 load.
 
I yanked the stock fan/cooler off my nforce3 board and replaced it with a larger passive one...thermal probe on it has yet to break 41c under full load.

*edit* might want to remove it and check the thermal paste
 
yeah mine is near scorching hot to the touch, but its an intel 915g mobo with just a simple hs on it. does this heat decrease performance?
 
decreases stability afaik
if its hot wc it, my nb isnt hot so i just cool it this way:

50mm fan for those who are curious 12 cfm goodness at 28db :D
 
Yah I yanked mine out, (I used the word "yank" becuase...thats almost what I had to do) and attempted to take the realy thick thermal pad off. I ended up removing some of that foamy stuff so I just removed it all and attemped to sand it at 600 grit. I used the word attempted because it didn't go to well...then i put some arctic silver5 on and plopped the cooler back in.

Load Temp:
Before: 52*
After: 51*

Kind of a waste of time...
 
if you sanded it properly it would have been a lot better i bet
 
Yah I was expecting a load temp lower than 45*. A lot of people at dfi-street.com say that they lowered their temperatures by 5* just by using arctic silver 5. I used that and did a rushed lap job. Got 1* lower...

One day i'll just install a zalman passive heatsink...
 
note my zalman passive chipset isnt so passive, but i also have little to no air flow over the motherboard, OTES is a godsend when it comes to my pwm, they would de-solder themselves

i sand things to 2000 grit
funny part is i did this heat sink and just gave it to my friend, never used it

im such a wierdo, if you want a heat sink lapped leave it on my table and come back in about 2 weeks, it would be lapped when you come back
 
I remember that thread you made with that picture! You inspired me to try to lap a heatsink after that but I just never got around to finding a place that caries high grit sandpaper. :rolleyes:

I just installed an xp-120 earlier today, so now I have an amd stock cooler to practice on. :)
 
takes a hour or two for me to lapp one, i guess you get elite at it after your 12th or so heat sink and you have from 100-2000 grade sand paper and everything inbetween as well as rubbing compound, cant wait to see what rubbing compound does to a heat sink lapped to 2000 grit
home depot has up to 1000 grit i belive, autozone for the rest
