I did a quick o/c job on my opteron 175 and mainboard mentioned in thread title.

O/c stable at 2684, but when i double up instances of prime, the chipset temp jumps to 55c. Smartguardian alerts saying the temp is high. Now, the board is passively cooled, but has a heatsink. All other temps stay well within range.

Does anyone running this board at an o/c run a cooler on the chipset sink? Temp only jumps when cpu init is at 100%, but i dont want to have this situation looming...

Suggestions?

the chipset temp... first i've ever heard of a chipset haveing a built in moniter... then again.. i live on a rock in the middel of the ocean...

are you shure its the chipet temp and not the CPU? ... and as oc'ing gose... if its to hot, do what ever you have to, to cool it.. if you need a new/ better HS.. get one... if you think just a fan is fine... use one... you may have an isolated case, maybe not... most of the guys one here will see a passvis HS laugh and replace it with something better.... me... I water cool the chipset.. even thought i dont have to... it will make the board last longer (i hope) and its definatly helps with stability

It's not the cpu. Smartguardian has three different temps. CPU wwmIC and CHIPSET. I have lots of fans...

My temps on a OC'd x2 3800+ were WAY lower than that (around 40 celcius max). You need airflow through that heatsink above the mosfets (where the heatpipe leads to) you also need to have the board upright (I've read of problems with the premium upside down in the Lian Li cases) if you have both of these problems taken care of, check to make sure the heatpipe is contacting the NF4 MCP and there is sufficient thermal paste. One of those solutions should work.

its a heatpipe :) , make a shroud so part of the exhaust case fan pulls air over the heatsink [it is by the cpu socket {if you didn't know...}]

I know where the sink is. It's between the back of the case, and the cpu heatsink. I've got 1 120mm fan blowing through a scythe ninja, and 2 80mm fans on the other side.

Whats the best way to create a shroud? Passive cooling is nice, but it is limited it seems. I dont feel lile dissasembling my computer to put more grease on it.

you could use sheet aluminum then bend/weld/epoxy it so it covers like half the 80mm fan and creates airflow by the heatsink

that sounds like an ordeal...If the heat becomes a problem i'll just kick back my O/C. 2.7ghz dual core sure is nice though .

The only thing that makes the chipset temperature jump is dual prime95. Hasn't even gone over 40c just gaming yet. I set smartguardian to alert me when the temp gets to 55c.

Is 55c really that high? 55 is the first degree of temp that S-G alerts at, and it doesn't go above that. I just dont like the idea of overheating my new components. This shit ain't cheap :(

just take some card board, like a paper plate , cut it up and make a shroud, if it helps, look into something more permanent (plexy perhaps), if it dosent help that much then your problem lies else where.
