Just got this card on a trade with no heatsink or fan. I noticed the chips about 10 seconds after I opened the box it was shipped to me in, and I haven't put my water block on it yet....so I know I didn't do the damage. Maybe caused from the original owner while removing the hs/f?

Anyone have a chipped core like this? If so, do you have any problems with your card?

I won't be able to set it up and test it until sunday night :(

DEMAND A REFUND NOW. Even if card works NOW, the damage there may over time and cause the card to fail.

Not a video card, but the best example i have.

I once had an Athlon (T-Bird) 1GHz that i chipped one corner on while taking a heatsink off. When i tried the chip it did still work, but sisoft sandra showed FPU benchmarks to be around about Athlon 900MHz speeds, basicly the FPU got damaged and thus was slower than a real 1GHz. Suprisingly the system ran ok for about 6 month, but after that the system died.

So yeah, that card will be liable to fail, and could be slower too, even if it does work. You really want to be demanding a refund if it showed up like that.

It is works or it doesn't. I have never seen any proof of chipped edges causing slowdowns or premature failures unless chipped further. Stories otherwise are misleading.

:D Advice from Kyle! We might as well close this thread right now ;)

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll test it out and see what happens. If it works, I'll keep it. If not, I'll ask for my trade back, or an equal value cash refund.

I hope someone who has a card with a similar problem will post.

Well whoever made the trade with you should have mentioned the corners were chipped. If he didn't know let him know via e-mail what you discovered.

and let the rest of us know who it is.

yes, I've already notified him and sent these pictures. I hope the card tests out fine. I'd rather just have it work than go through "un-trading" a trade.

I won't do that unless he is unreasonable and refuses to trade back, or purchase the item I used to trade. He has yet to respond, but I'm sure he will shortly.

EDIT: the original owner has responded, and is willing to work with me. Nothing more I can do until I test it out sunday night.

Ahhh, my old AlthlonXP chips were allways chipin on the edges like that. I never had any problems with them, even after long term use, in fact a 3200+ AXP I sold a guy looked hella wors that that and his CPU I know for a fact is still working 2 years later!

I sy if it works keep it..

inspiring :D thanks

guess there's only one way to find out for sure....I'll VERY conservatively apply as5 and my water block. Then run it hard for several hours, and see what happens.

I've had an XFX 6600gt running in a spare computer for quite a while and it has badly chipped corners as well. It still works the same as when I got it, so I don't think you need to bother returning it unless it doesn't work properly.

yes, i would say try it.

my 6600gt gpu has one corner chipped of as has the hsi-bridge chip.
runs fine like before, but only time will tell if there are any long time problems.

I just got back from camping and installed the card. Runs like a champ. I've been running it hard with RTHDRIBL, bf2, doom3, hl2, and trackmana sunrise for a few hours now. Not a single problem.

i sorta chipped the sides and corners of my 9700pro while trying to clean off some hard thermal material, works fine for me
