I went to my local Walmart last night and found a “open box” RTX 5080 for $859.99 in the returns bargain bin. Has anyone else found something like this? The employee said it’s not the first time that he’s seen them come back as an in store return too.

I want a 6 month report on these walmart return gpu's  Then i'll seriously consider it.

Do these stores actually have GPUs for sale or were these online orders returned to a local store? I never seen a PC hardware for sale at any Walmart near me.

Normal caveats on "open box returns".... lots of scammers out there. Get a 5080, return my 2080 in the box, etc. Profit!!

This! The Walmart associate accepting the "return" could not even know what they are looking at when looking at the contents of the package upon the return..
Same scam happens with hard drive shucking ...

$860 for a new 5080 (if they accept the RMA, have no idea what the open box return conditions look like) could take more than 3 years before finding another deal like that... certainly much faster, could imagine you need to act relatively fast.

That said, even with missing ROP, that could be an honest price if it is still faster than a 5070ti-4080s.

Doesn't Walmart have a 90 day return policy? Just use it until you find something in stock. Unless you still have that 4090. I'm curious how the 5080 with missing ROPs compares.

Well I now know why it was returned, it’s missing ROPs. So I’ll be returning it as well this evening.
I would love to pay $860 for a 5080 with missing ROPs. If you don't keep it, you will almost certainly be able to flip it for profit - disclose its missing ROPs to the buyer and they'll pay anyway. Or sell it here at cost!

I still have my 4090 I was planning on just skipping the 5000 series all together. I only picked this up to replace the 4070 Ti Super in my VR rig

I’m going to contact ZOTAC and see what kind of support I can get and ask them about wait times for a replacement. I’m not sure how they will deal with a technically “used” card since I bought it as an open box though.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if they RMA the card in a timely manner given the current environment. Good luck! It's like you won the lottery for $500 or so, haha.

I've seen posts on my local Facebook marketplace where RTX 50xx sellers admit they'll return their GPU to Amazon if they can't sell it. I think this happens when a scalper can't sell their card but I've also seen Redditors admit panicking over the shortage and buying two GPUs thinking one may get cancelled or undelivered. For the latter I told them they should at least try selling their GPU at cost as I don't trust the Amazon return system and returned GPUs could end up lost or in a landfill.

Well in this case I think it’s pretty obvious whoever originally bought this card figured out it’s missing ROPs and either didn’t wanna wait for an RMA or a refund online and deal with shipping and took it back to a physical store.

That is risky af if you need the GPU because the shortage continues plus prices for a new GPU have been going up. I'd rather deal with a RMA as the price for my MSI RTX 5080 Shadow 3x OC increased $110 in a week's time.

For the discounted price, probably still worth keeping it. Most RTX 5070tis are going for $800+. It might be a bit slower, but again for the price, not bad. Will beat any similarly priced 5070ti. That is assuming it works fine otherwise.

Well if it's only roughly at the performance of a 5070 Ti there is literally no point in me keeping it since it's meant for a replacement in a system with a 4070 Ti Super and the 5070 Ti is barely faster than that. So it's RMA or return only for me. I'm going to email Zotac later tonight when I get home and see what they are thinking for turn around time and if it's ridiculous, back to Walmart it goes.....

How many ROPs is it missing? I suppose you can check this video and other benchmarks to see if the performance/price ratio makes sense for you:

Still a decent bit faster than a 5070ti. Performance is still closer to a proper 5080. Almost seems like a hypothetical 5070ti Super. I suppose it comes down to, is this performance at $860 worth it, or would you prefer to wait and find a proper 5080 for $1300+.

It's missing 8 ROPs. It was showing 104 ROPs instead of the 112 it's supposed to have in GPU-Z. I've already taken the card out of the system and put the RTX 4070 Ti Super back in it till I decide what I'm gonna do with this lemon.

That sucks. Do you think you can still do an RMA? It's still a good price if it can replaced with RMA.

An alternative would be to see if anyone here wants it. I'd be interested but it is a bit above what I can afford, I assume around $950 after taxes + $20 for shipping. But for some people looking for a GPU right now, maybe someone may want it. Still faster than a 5070ti and costs roughly the same and less than a $1300-1500 proper 5080, if you can even find one of those in stock. Who knows, maybe this hits a good performance price ratio for other members.

Walmart gets returns at the Service Desk from people wanting their money back for online purchases. So they sometimes go to the clearance aisle so Walmart can get some of their money back anyway.

Wow so I guess stock levels are improving. I just got notification that the defective card has been received and a new is being sent out. I should have it by the weekend assuming it ships today.

That's faster than the return time for Kel-Tec RDB rifle repair that I'm still waiting on :ROFLMAO:

I wouldn't be surprised if random Walmart stores have some returned 5090s. They had a $3600 sold by Walmart.com PNY 5090 drop right around the time the "reciprocal tariffs" kicked in briefly. So they sold cards at 35%+ tariff prices. Then the tariffs were put on hold shortly thereafter. I bet a lot of people who bought those returned them. Question is what will they be asking for them.
