faster better ram... ARGGHHH.
NF7 board......
36gb of hard drive?? i can fill that up in 10 minutes

I would just get a standard WD, Hitachi or whatever 120 gig SATA drive. A raptor seems out of place in that rig since it looks to be more of a value system.

get your priorities straight then choose hardware, right now that computer has split personalities.

Well, the guy doesn't need more than 36.7 GB, he's coming from like a 15 GB hard drive that he's only using half of, so it'll be more than enough, and it will give him good speed. I think the RAM is fast enough, it's got good enough latency and will work synchronously with the mobo. I guess I'll check out the NF7, but I need on-board audio and LAN. Also, I need a link to a place I can buy windows 2000 or XP for cheap. Faster better RAM=more money.... :(

switch this mobo with the one in there:

Now what do you think?

You can get an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro for <$140 at newegg, I'm sure the home version is quite a bit cheaper.

Also that Raptor drive is still overkill and also louder. If he doesn't need size or performance specifically make a wiser decision and just buy a WD 80gig special Edition with 8mb cache. They can be found for well under $100 (I've seen them anywhere between $50 and $80). It's not SATA, but it's a lot cheaper than the drive you've picked.

Those 80 gig special editions perform nicely anyway.

Well, I'd like to give him the fastest boot speed possible, afterall, since he's not doing ultra heavy gaming and stuff, I'd like to impress him with the boot speed. Here, check out the new RAM I picked out: Also, should I probably go with a 9600 pro instead of 9600 XT? how much slower is the 9600 pro than 9600 XT?

i like 9600XT for half-life 2, without the coupon its not really worth it. its a slightly better and faster card, but i dont think very noticably. i still say get pc-3200 ram so that he can overclock nicely. i think the mushkin level 2 pc-3200 sticks still run 2-2-2-6

The retail ATI will for sure come with the coupon.

Zeke, he's not gaming, he's not doing anything intensive, the 80 gig special edition will be fine. Listen to the advice we give you.

The 80 gigger performs almost as well as many SATA drives, in fact my roomie and I just ran HD Tach, his 80 gig special edition isn't much different from our 120 gig SATAs (he has a Hitachi and I have a WD, soon to add a second). In fact his 80 gig drive holds the Windows installation and it boots up real quick. For the money its a good solid choice.

Get the special edition and save money, don't be silly. Besides it gives him extra space should he ever decide to use it.

I posted the final specs, I'm getting him a 8x 64mb Geforce 4 instead, so the total will be 640 before shipping & handling, and I'll leave the Raptor in there, besides, I'm thinking about getting a few of them so this wil be like my little test machine :D Check it out bro:

Is this computer for you or a friend? I'd still ditch the raptor. It's a waste of money and not necessary.

get the nf7 non s. and the 80 gigger. ull save money on hard drive and the non s nf7 has no onboard SATA support. thats the only difference.

btw dont ask questions if u dont wanna hear the answers. thanks

NF7-S.

80 gig IDE drive.

I'd avoid the GF4MX if you can. Maybe a low end Ti4200?

I don't know, the SATA may be good because in the future should this person want to add another hard drive it might be considerably easier to just buy a SATA drive and not deal with adapters or anything else.

He does that a lot.

it's not that I don't want to hear the answers, i just have a different opinion. you can't honestly tell me that an 80 GB IDE 7200 RPM is going to be anywhere near the performance of the Raptor. I suppose I may go to a higher vid card, but unless I ditch the raptor i should keep the S version... I'll consider it though guys, thanks for the suggestions :D

Seriously though, don't get the MX, get a Ti4200 instead or a Radeon 9600 of some type.
I agree..

Also, I doubt you will notice the difference in the raptor. I see where you are comming from, and I was about to get 2x36GB raptors in raid 0. You have to wait for everyone else in games, and unless you are doing HEAVY photoshop or the like it is uneeded. I boot up as fast as my friend using 2xWD Raptors and load just as fast to. You would get better value out of another HD. I really like the first part list you had better then the second.

In photoshop it's better to have enough ram then rely on a fast scratch disk where possible. And even then only certain types or RAID work for scratch disks, it's more about speed of access rather than total bandwidth.

Zeke, I wouldn't honestly tell you the WD 80 gig special edition is faster, but it's pretty much stupid to put a raptor in a basic machine. It's a louder drive, and while its a bit faster, isn't worth it to the average user. They'd be better served having a more forward thinking purchase by having a larger drive. What I did tell you is that the special edition is about as fast as the 120 gig SATA drives out there, which means it's pretty damn quick.

Besides, why do you need to spend $130 on a 36 gig drive when you can spend about half that on an 80 gig dive that would serve the person just as well if not better?

You haven't really come up with a reason other than "you want to" which is fine, just think about it.

you guys talk as if a slower video card is going to bottleneck the entire system, but it's only going to bottleneck the video. this guy isn't doing any gaming, he just watches videos of car races sometimes on the internet and stuff. If you guys really insist, I'll get the WD Special Edition 80 gig, but I really think the Raptor would have a noticeable difference. Also, what do you mean you have to wait for everyone in games? shouldn't the raptors load faster than everyone else's?

For a vid card, check EVGA on newegg.com, I think they have a 5900 non-ultra for about 200 bucks or so, that should outperform any 9600 series card.

Zeke, is this a high performance system or a basic computer for someone who does simple computing? The Raptor isn't for people who do simple computing, save the guy some money, for most things the raptor won't be enough different.

And if you were paying attention you'd realize that what was said above is that you'd be waiting on other people to load, you'd just be standing there looking around. Happens to me all the time.

I like standing there looking around, then when they load, they and the server admin go "Damn Zeke, you got a fast comp", and I go, ya, it's [H]ardcore :D But perhaps I'll take ur guys' advice and get the WD Special Edition 80 GB...... thanks for the advice guys, you rule :D
