Something must be up with stats, because mine kept going down for the past 4 days, and then yesterday I had almost two days worth of stats in one day, so maybe the 23rd was catching up for the mess up on the 21st???
 
Dang...OCAU had 3.1??? Man have we got to fix this!!! They are down to 2.2 years, very scary!!!
 
My stats have been all over the place recently, so I'm also inclined to say that somethings up with them. I looked at the stats last night and we were at just over 2.6mil with OCAU at just over 2.7mil, but damn I didn't think either of us would top out that high.

 
The stats sometimes undergo spikes like this when there's a backlog of unreleased points. Even so, it's a great showing for the team.

well, i started folding on my primary rig a few days ago (when i'm asleep and at work, at least). next paycheck i'm gonna look into a replacement PSU for my old dysfunctional Dell XPS 200. i'm also gonna try to scrounge up other broken down PCs from friends and family and see what'd be needed to get them folding.

i know it's not much, but i'm happy to do what little i can for the [H]orde. oh, and Stanford i guess :p

Think its the dip from 7-21 took 48 hours to get the points added back in.

Look at everyone's PPD for 7-21 and it was down 10-20% from normal, then on 7-23 everyone was up around the same amount they had went down.

I normally get 10 WU's completed a day @ 480 each thats 4800 PPD.

So far in the past 24 hours I've had 14 WU's @ 480. So I probably had 3-4 missing WU's from Monday. Which is almost exactly what I was missing that day.

Nawh..., that ain't scary' that's pitiful, disgraceful, unFu*kingBelievable and generally "fu*ked up" to the "max" :mad::mad::mad:

How the hell did any folding team, no matter how good they are (and I've got to admit OCAU is good, just not as good as the [H]orde) get in the unbelievable range of overtaking the best of the best folding team in the whole world in just 2.2 freaking years

As Mr relic says "they are out producing us", so we's got to get off our "dead arses" and "ramp up" if we can. That includes me, I'm gonna' try for a 8800GT a little earlier than I expected (I know late for the party again, in a way I've been fighting going back to windose, I like Linux :() and I'm feeding more "cat nip" to my semi folding cat :D)

If this post is offensive or I'm "over reacting" in any way please forgive me, the 2.2 years thing just surprised the hell outa' me . :rolleyes:

how many cores and GPUs do you have folding to do 10 WUs per day? i must be doing something wrong, because my machine's been working on the same one for almost 2 days now.

This is just on a single GPU. A decent 8800GT will do 10 WU per day.

If it take more than 2 days to do a single WU, it mean you probably run a console or systray uniprocessor client on a old machine.

well, i wouldn't call it "an old machine", but i guess it depends on how frequently you're used to upgrading. i realized pretty soon there had to be faster ways to get this done, but i wanted to let it finish the WU before switching to another client configuration.

sheesh, i feel like a n00b all over again :(

so since GPUs appear to be so much faster, i have two questions. i mentioned wanting to resurrect an old Dell. it's a half-height case; between ATI and nVidia, it seems the two best half-height cards are an HD 3450 or a GeForce 8500GT. any suggestions as to which would do better?

also, i'm looking to upgrade the 8600GTS in my sig rig. i've had my eye on a 4870X2 (based on previews). since it's two GPUs, will there be any strangeness trying to fold on it?
 
8800GT if you're going for folding. They crank out 10+ WU's a day @ 480. I think nvidia's CUDA + drivers are just much better optimized for folding. I don't think its the hardware as much as the software, so I don't know if I'd go the 48xx route.

So if you get an 8800GT you're getting 4800PPD just from the GPU. Then you can run the 5.03 client on a dual core system or an SMP client on a quad core system for some extra points, but I don't bother doing it since I just have dual core system.

My work computer with the GPU client + a SLOW ass GeForce 8300GS does a WU in about 33 hours. (1 day 1/2 roughly). So it does 300PPD with just the GPU.

If you can sneek a 8800GT/GS/GTS in there instead of a 8600GTS you will get ~2x the points.

As far as the 4870X2, nothing special. Just follow the normal duel vid card howto. If you are getting it just for, or mostly for points, I might stay with Nvidia, but if points is a 2nd goal, that is one bad ass card.

 
There are also half height 8600GTs out there. That would be your best bet for a half height card.

the 8600 i have now was something i picked up to hold me over last winter when 8800s were nigh impossible to find. i paid $20 to a friend for it. then i got sucked into the waiting game (well, that, and the spending all my cash at the bars game).

the X2 would be an upgrade for my gaming rig, so points would be (on that system at least) a secondary goal. however i still haven't made up my mind. the X2 previews are still only that, previews. beyond that, i'm not too hot on the idea of spending more than $300 on a graphics card--so i might still go GTX 260 instead, now that it's priced the same as the 4870s (and performs similarly enough for me).

ORLY!?! ...ooh, yes, i just found one. resurrecting this Dell's gonna be fun. besides doing something for the [H]orde, it gives me an excuse to start a fun little case modding project.

Yeah, I just bought a half height 8600GT made by Chaintech. Put it in my Dell Inspiron 530s, but because of the way the case is designed, I'm getting a lot of WU's crashing because of overheating, so until I can figure out how to rig another fan in there to blow the hot air out, and possible put a better GPU fan on the card, I have to leave the case open, and the supporting bar off.

Nothing, I just liked the case, it looked good closed, and my wife was going to let me keep it next to the couch so it was on another circuit, but with it open, it's got to go into the same room as the rest of them. So, I'd lik to close it so I can keep it outside the main folding room.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if there is a cord that takes a 3 prong fan connector and splits it into two? Or one that takes a SATA power connector and splits it off into a 3 prong fan connctor? One thing about these new Dell's, they do not have any molex connectors, only SATA power connectors.

 
yes there is SATA converters to fan connectors. You might need to go sata to molex to fan, but that would be worse case.

I use jab-tech.com hope that is the right addy... it has a ton of cabling... or use monoprice another good, but cheap source!

 
i was re-reading the suggestions in this thread last night and thinking about airflow and heat. when kendrak said "If you can sneek a 8800GT/GS/GTS in there instead of a 8600GTS you will get ~2x the points," i thought he meant my main gaming rig. maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but i thought about trying to fit a full height card into the XPS 200 case using a 2U riser adapter.

i'd definately have to lose the proprietary HDD mountain apparatus, and maybe also go for a different CPU cooler. here's a link to a pic of the insides of an XPS 2xx:

you may or may not be able to tell, but that's a micro BTX motherboard. the CPU is rotated 45 degrees off the X/Y axes (so it's a diamond shape instead of a square), and i'm not even sure if there are the usual LGA 775 holes for mounting heatsinks.

if i were to use a 2U PCIe x16 riser card, i'd have to (re)move the HDD. there is an external 3.5" bay i can probably adapt, but i was also wondering if i could instead use a USB thumb drive to boot windows. would that severely effect the folding in any way? from what i've read, you can't use more than a 2GB stick as a bootable drive, but maybe i could use a second drive for the folding client(s)...? of course this is assuming the dell BIOS supports booting from a thumb drive.

i also wonder about the OS. the computer came with MCE 2005, but i also have access to Server 2000. again i'm trying to keep this on a budget.

i'll be keeping my eyes on the FS threads looking for 8800s, but if i ended up buying one new, would getting one with only 256MB of memory (for less money) impact the PPD?
