I have two systems. One is a 2.4C overclocked to 3.2 Ghz, one is a A64 2800+ overclocked to 2.4 Ghz.

Specs -
P4 2.4C @ 3.2 Ghz
Asus P4C800 Deluxe mobo (875P)
1 GB Mushkin DDR 400 @ DDR422
2x 80 Sata HDD in Raid 0
Ati X800 Pro
NEC DVD RW
Asus 16X DVD
Audigy Z2 Gamer

A64 2800+ @ 2.43 Ghz
Gigabyte K8NS Pro (Nforce3)
1 GB Kingston Hyper X PC4000 @ DDR 540
2x 80 Sata HDD in Raid 0
Ati X800 Pro
NEC DVD RW
Asus 16X DVD
Audigy Z2 Gamer

All the hardware is identical with the exception of the mobo and cpus. I have noticed between running aquamark that the cpu scores were nearly identical which I found kind of odd. So I decided to do a purely cpu intenisve test between the two. I used DVD Decrypter pull off a movie. I then downloaded the latest AutoGK to convert the ripped DVD to an Xvid encoded AVI 700MB in size (in non-geek terms :) - taking a DVD and making it fit on a CD.).

This is a extremely CPU intensive task (both boxes were pegged 100% CPU for the entire task).

First up was the A64 - From click to complete it took 1 hour 45 minutes. Was it good, was it bad?? I had no idea until I repeated it on the P4

From click to complete 2 hours and 49 minutes!! The A64 trounced it but good..I was pretty amazed that it beat it by that much. The P4 has been my primary system for months now..looks like I will be switching out!!

lemme know what ya think ;)

why on earth would a p4 be your main system in the first place? A freaking Sempron 3100+ oc'ed to 2.4 ghz would give a p4 EE a butt whoopin, well congrats on making a wise choice...eventuly :)

AMD is much better these days for CPU oriented task...

but from what i see, the margin shouldn't be that big until i see that your hardware is TOTALLY Different!

your RAMS! one running at 422 while another at 540! as you know, this cater to the memory bandwidth for the CPU to process... thus if both we're to be put at the same speed, the difference of encoding time will reduce...

but still, i believe AMD will lead :D

P4 chipset is dual channel - the memory bandwidth is almost 6 GB/s

The single channel (socket 754) is 4 GB/s so the P4 has higher memory bandwidth as well as hyperthreading...
