Aight, my sister is currently running on this system:

p2 266
192mb of SDRAM
40gig harddrive
ATI 32mb DDR
12x burner
24x reader
floppy
linksys LAN card

ANYWAY, her comp has been actin up lately and i decided ive had enough with cleaning out her startup items yadda yadda yadda, basic computer matinence...

If i reuse the:

40 gig harddrive
ATI 32mb DDR
12xburner
24x Reader
floppy

and Add:

Foxconn Super Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "PC-132" -RETAIL - $25

Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2100 - $68

BIOSTAR nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "M7NCD" -RETAIL - $53

AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 266 MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor - OEM - $52

Anyway, the total is about $198 w/o shipping. She likes to listen to music, AIM, and play games like the sims, and RCT.

Is this worth it, and are there any better (cheaper) ways of going about this.

If you are really looking to save money, you could go with 256MB of ram. This is plenty for her applications

depending on the os

yeah, if you are gonna get a new Windows, just don't...get Mandrake9.2 or Lindows or some Linux distro, she can still tal on AIM via GAIM, she can listen to mp3's and surf websites...and you don't have to spend $149.99...

EDIT: oh yeah, and for her school projects/papers or whatever that need to be able to be edited/accessed on school computers running M$...she can run Open Office and just export everything to M$ file extensions...that's what i do, at least (since i don't have Powerpoint, lol :p)

Thanks for the replies:

I'd really like to go with the 512 for this reason:

You know when you get those annoying popups? and they that little window opens asking you if you would like to install the following: Lalallalal. Well, she usually clicks yes, so this would give me some room to work on it when it is clogged with spyware.

I'd also say that the ram seems a bit high. Since you don't really need speed, I'd look at best buy, etc. You should be able to pick some up cheap after rebate.

I cant get to the page, it says that the page requires cookies enabled, which i have...

Anyway, i'm kinda partial to crucial because its so reliable. This system will have 0 overclocking. But i dont want to get some generic crap either.

Mmmm... i have legit windows that im just gonna install, but even if i didnt i wouldnt feel safe putting her on a linux system...

Looks good, but if you wanted to save the ATI card, you could always get a NForce2 with Video.

I'd also look a buying a better PSU, but it's not really required.
