My brother asked me to look into some decent pc speakers for him. He is using some 10+ year old ones now and he wants something decent for waching movies with his gf, etc. I honestly have no idea whats good in that $25-$50 range and would purely be guessing.
 
Actually I use a cable like this (6 and 10 ft available if needed).

LEPAI Amp comes with 2 amp power supply, I use 6 amp monitor power bricks instead. At higher volume the 2 amp "buzzes."
Used to find good 12 v 6 amp bricks around $9 shipped with prime.

Prices and quality has been fluctuating with low end powered computer speakers. Not really seeing good sound under $100.
A refurbished TV sound bar with sub might be findable, but these > $70-80.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Found a couple of suggestions I may need for a system.
 
im using a pair of Micca Motion MB42's powered by a SMSL SA-36A T-Amp. sounds amazing for the price.
 
The MIcca MB42 (or for $20 more the MB42X) has become the "bang for your buck" speaker of choice. The Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers are its main competition when they go on sale.

I have a pair of the MB42X and have paired them with this amp: http://www.parts-express.com/2x8w-at-4-ohm-tpa3110-class-d-audio-amplifier-board-only--320-329. I went from a pair of Audioengine A2s to the Micca/ 3110 setup and its a big upgrade. If you can spare a few extra bucks you can get the bigger brother of the 3110, the 3116: http://store.sure-electronics.com/audio/aa-ab32178.

I think that offering is the best that really closely fits the price range. But I agree with the others here mentioning that the Micca's are a step up. MB42's would be fine (you can actually purchase a small upgrade kit that transforms them into MB42x's later on). A nice SMSL, Muse, or Indeed T-amp (Ebay's buy it now has the best prices) is the way to go as well if you can afford more than the Lepai.

Keep in mind that the Dayton's (6.5") are quite large while the Micca's (4") are much smaller if desk space is a concern.

You really can't get anything that will sound really good for $50.00 Let's face it...You'll be regulated to Logitech & friends. The best option is Creative T20's Series II These can be had for sound $60.00 when on sale. I bought these for my parents computer & they sound pretty good overall. I plugged-in my I-POD & they rocked well enough for the money.

Many people don't have the real estate on their desks. With the T20's you're ready out-of-the-box. Good luck!
