Cheapish DSLR

I need a cheapish (under $700 preferably, $300-$600 would be best) Digital SLR.

I don't have any preferences, although pentax would be nice (as long as regular 35mm film camera lenses can be used on DSLR cameras).

A canadian store would be nice.

The cheapest you can probably get are the Digital Rebel bodies from Canon, and the Nikon D50 bodies, both of which are around $700 USD each if I remember.

Pentax has the *ist DSLR, and the body goes for around $700 USD I think.

As for stores in Canada, I don't know.

It doesn't have to be new,

Its a (hopeful) christmas present for my dad.

Get yourself a 10D if you can afford to then buy lenses

Otherwise a D30 will suffice for most.

Asking that question shows you dont need a dslr. The body itself is one of the cheapest parts of this hobby. You're going to spend much more on lenses, flashes, batterys, filters, etc. Atleast 5x the camera body cost of you even want a a semi decent setup.

Well, it's a present for his father, who I assume already owns Pentax lenses if he's wondering if the DSLR will accept Pentax 35mm format lenses (which the DSLR *ist will if they're K-mount. I have no idea about much outside of Canon's EF mounting and the Nikon F-mount systems).

And if that's the case, the Pentax *ist DS would be the best choice if you already have lenses for Pentax cameras. I'm not sure how much they go for used however.

Giving this reply indicates that you dont own one.

Check out Fred Miranda Buy/Sell for a used D30/D60 or 10D. Or maybe a used Digital Rebel. I don't knowa bout $300 but $600 you definitely can get something.

Any of the cameras I listed can take EF lenses dating way back to 1980s. Canon's the way to go =) You can also get adapters for the EOS system (there's a ton of quality m42 mount lenses floating out there!)

You should be able to pick up a D30 for a little over $300

Canon's triple rebate is going on now. If you wait for a Dell sale and can get some friends to buy lenses, you'll be able to get some really good deals on the RebelXT

Geez, what do you consider "semi-decent"? You can get a RebelXT body for $800 or a 20D body for $1200ish, and you don't need to spend anywhere near 4-6K on glass and lighting unless you're buying Canon's line of f/2.8 L zooms. Roughly 2K will get you a 17-40 f/4L, a 70-200 f/4L, a 50 f/1.4 and a 580EX..

Ya a pentax would be nice, since my dad already owns 2.

I know what a d30 is (nikon I preume?) but what brand is a d10?

edit:Jeez what's with my S button?

These are all canon cameras being discussed so far.

In order of when they were made

Canon DSLR's (that were worth buying)

D30
1D
1Ds
D60
10D
300D (Digital rebel)
1DmkII
1DsMKII
20D
350D (Digital rebel XT)
5D
1DMKII-n

;)

and nikon: (in order of price, low to high)
D50
D70
D70S
D1
D1H
D1X
D2
D2H
D2X

the D30 and D60 are canons

Canon Rebel 300D are about $500 new with lens
and the Rebel 350XT are about $700 for body. You can buy the kit lens cheap off ebay

^no prob.

if he already has the lenses then i would definitley suggest getting a pentax. but i myself prefer canon over anything else (but since my G6 got stolen (bastards <_<) id take any DSLR i could get my hands on)

Mcbain Camera isn't bad although I think they are a bit over priced.
http://www.mcbaincamera.com/digital/digitalpen.htm

You can also look at futureshop, London drugs for the "cheaper" DSLR's

I ended up buying my digital rebel xt from London drugs because the price was much cheaper then Mcbain Camera at the time.

I would find out what lenses your Dad actually has make sure they will fit on the Digital Pentax body. You can do this by either looking at the specifications online or by speaking to a someone that sells the camera. I'm dealing with Canon and the two most important things I realized are
1. There is a 1.6 crop factor. Basically this means that a standard 18-55mm lens will act as a 28-88mm lens. There are full frame camera's but they tend to cost quite a bit more.
2. Canon has lenses built for Digital SLR (non full frame) camera's. This will allow you to get the wide angles.
I do not know if pentax has these issues. I've never looked into it. These will be important things to consider because your dad may not be happy when his lenses don't produce the same things on both camera's.
I know you want it get it as a present but it may be worth talking to him about it first. Perhaps you could approach it as though you were interested in Digital photography and ask for information about lenses. Will his lenses fit on the camera. Will he lend you the lenses etc.
If he seems excited about it then you could use that as a starting point.

I am looking at one right now ... the Nikon D50 for $699 shipped free

http://www.digital1234.com/product.jsp?x=D50OUTFIT

Can anybody chime in if this is a good buy? Includes an AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED Lens

i'd be somewhat cautious of this seller. Their Reseller Rating is so-so. Basically it looks like you may have difficulties contacting them if you ever have a problem.

Canon Digital Rebel XT SLR w/ 18-55mm Lens (280 uses)
$999 - 20% GRQV78RM6N57SC - $60 C0K8VM63KBZ73M - $75MIR = $664
