I currently have a 250gts (soon to be a 560ti) in my pc and I'm wanting to run 3 monitors. Only one for gaming the other 2 are for 3d modeling work. All dvi, or vga.

My h61 motherboard doesn't support this for some reason as I'd just prefer to use the onboard for a third monitor. I have one free pcie x1 (the small one). Would would be the cheapest way to get a third monitor working?

Skip the 560ti and get a 650 or 660. The run everything off one card.
Use a HDMI to DVI converter for the third.

What 3D modeling software are you using? If it requires CUDA or otherwise nVidia-oriented your options are limited with a 560ti. If you haven't already gotten the card get a 660ti instead, it does 3 monitors out of the box. If you aren't firmly in the nVidia camp go with an AMD card as any of them with DisplayPort automatically supports at least 3 monitors and many models support as many as 6.

The reason you can't get the onboard to work is that the integrated GPU in the 1156 CPUs are designed to be disabled when a dedicated GPU is detected. On the 1155 chipsets it is possible to get as many as 3 monitors working if the motherboard manufacturer puts 2 DisplayPorts on the board.

if you prefer having a video card do it all but dont want to grab a nvidia 600 series then your only option is a ATI 6 series or 7 series. Nvidia wont allow you to use 3 monitors on 1 card with prior 500 series and below cards. so your best bet is to go with a gtx 600 series card or wait for the new 700 series coming out soon.

for years I used a 4 series card and a quadro 370 (assigned to physics). Worked great for 3 monitors.
