I am looking to build a ESXi server to run whs or a fileserver and some machines for fooling around with.
I want to be able to run 64 bit guests and be able to do RDM and passthrough the disks.

I am wondering what is the cheapest used server that I can buy that is on the ESXi HCL and will work for Hyper-V as well.
Would I need a raid controller or would onboard work for the HCL servers?

So far the cheapest I have found that I believe would work is the Dell Poweredge 2950 starting at $550 on ebay.

Make sure it's a 64-bit server...most hardware RAID cards in real servers are supported so you can use internal disks.

I can tell you for a fact that they PE 2950 will work have 3 of them at work running ESXi

I would say for a brand new server you could go with the Dell T110. supports up to 16gb of ram. Its what I use in my home lab.
