Cheap Speakers (2.0)

I've decided to give my ageing game PC to a relative. It'll lack speakers so I want to add a pair. She's already staked out where it'll go and there's place to have two small speakers of the bookshelf kind. A sub wouldn't be bad, but I think it might get in the way. I'm looking for something very cheap but not crap - around $400. Self powered would undoubtedly be best so I was looking for reviews on some powered monitors but many of them look huge. Is there anything you would recommend?

Talk to BossNoodleKaboodle if you are interested in powered monitors, he seems to know more about them than most here. I personally have no experience, but there are a good number of bookshelves in that price range, assuming you do mean 400$ =]

If you might be looking to upgrade in the future, you might want to get passive monitors and an inexpensive receiver. Will you be looking to add a subwoofer in the future?

is there no way to connect active monitors and a sub together without a reciver/amp

and if you have powered monitors and a reciver couldnt you just connect the speakers to the monitor out and the sub to the sub out?

That would work just fine. Also, you could get a sub that has low-level inputs and connect it that way, so it would highpass the output at 80hz or whatever and output that signal to the monitors.

$400 (£250). As someone else said, it's relative. For me $20000 is a helluva nice set of speakers. I think it's a reasonable amount to spend on something that's not complete crap, especially as I'm giving this away. Sizewise I asked her and apparently there's two side shelves on either side of her desk about 10" wide/deep. It should ideally fit on there.I don't have to max out the budget either. I think it should look and sound decent, that's all.

Check out HTD, they have their level 2,3,and 4 speakers on clearance. I have a 5.1 set of the level 3's in dark cherry, they are quite nice.

Yes please. Most things are - but they just tend to be overpriced compared to the US.

I've no experience with their product lines though, but everyone generally seems to think they are pretty good. I honestly have no idea what's available overseas...and it certainly isn't any of the internet brands that I have the most experience with [unless you want to spend all that cash for shipping]
