Cheap server for ESXi Cluster...

[mikkhail]

I have the below setup:

AMD FX-8350 8-Core Socket AM3+ 4.0GHz-4.2GHz 8MB L3 Share
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0
G.Skill GSkill DDR3 16GB 2x8Gb 1600 MHz PC3 12800 Ripjaws
Western Digital WD 500GB SATA 3 Internal 3.5 Hard Drive
Intel PRO/1000 MT PCI-X Gigabit Quad Port Server Adapter
Synology DiskStation DS413j Series NAS
WD Western Digital 1TB Caviar Blue SATA 3 6GB/s 3.5” HDD x 4 (NAS)
Cisco Catalyst 2950 24 x 10 10/100BASE-T Port Switch

I spent $2,000 on the above setup, I want something extremely cheap to create a cluster...any recommendations?

$200 for dual low power quad core xeons (no-HT) and 16GB of RAM cheap enough?

if you want HA I don't think you can mix and match intel and amd. Maybe that has changed.

If I can inquire, how does the Synology NAS perform? I imagine you're using it as an iSCSI target for your disks. I've been planning a similar AMD-based test environment for VMware.
