Is there such a thing as a cheap, small, power conditioning UPS? (It Doesn't really have to be a UPS)

I have really dirty power where I live, lots of brownouts, power surges, spikes, ect..., but somehow very few complete blackouts (Maybe its just the house?)

Anyways, I really don't care about proper shutdown procedure, saving files, and the like...if the power goes out (I'll do something else) (I auto save all files I work on)

BUT, with a small and extremely cheap power conditioner I'd feel a lot better with the lights flickering on and off.

Is this something a good power supply (not UPS) should be able to handle by itself?

Am I wrong to be thinking about somthing like this? (maybe a 1500va for 10 sec?)

My system has a 480w neopower running lots of stuff, and a 21" trinitron crt.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check Office Max, Office Depot Staples, CC, etc for weekend specials. As a rule you can get something that will give you 10 min of shut down time for 35 to 50 bucks.

You mentioned 1500 VA, they don’t come cheap.

Often these guys have great deals.

You are right about getting a power conditioning UPS. Hard drives dont like brownouts. ;)
I got a new Liebert UPStation GXT a few years back on ebay for around $80, and it retailed for a bit over $1000. Been running 2 monitors and 2 boxes for 3 years now. Check Ebay!

I,ve seen those cheap ones and figured they would do a fine job keeping the computer up and running for a very short time....

However, those cheap units never mention power conditioning anywhere on the box (I think), only the more expensive and more powerful units mention power conditioning and it's usually printed on the front of the box with conditioning specs...

Am I way off base here?

Do all UPS's provide power conditioning?

To a degree even the cheap ones do some power conditioning just because of what they are. As they get better (read more expensive) they begin to do a better job of cleaning up what comes in as well as what goes out.

Even a lower priced one is better then none. I too have found some used ones at great prices so don’t forget to look around for those as well.

If you can find a Leibert those are among the best, for some reason many people don’t know what they are and they sell cheap. Very good units.

need that UPS part to deal with brownouts
unless you use a ferroresonant transformer
but Id advise against it, they oscillate with modern PSUs and crash
(I ran a Best Power FERRUPS for awhile till I learned better  )

Id second the ebay suggetion
but figure youll need to replace the batteries sooner rather than later and keep a close eye on the location and shipping,
see if you can buy one without the batteries, and buy new ones
in the long run that might be far cheaper, shipping lead is expensive :p
