There a way to get Vista or Xp ( 64 bit) OS for cheap? Hate dropping 100+ bucks on this
 
Probably not legally, I seen ebay selling software that can be a bit shady these days or if you are part of a school that has an MSDN license to sell the os.
 
You can try Ebay. If you're a student your school might have some options.
 
You can also try our FS/FT Forums. I've seen a few legal licenses going for less than $100.
 
usually there are special prices for students and so
but why not try linux? she gives everything you need , except for gaming

Totally agreed, so long as you don't need DirectX 10 gaming support XP x64 is awesome... and bloody FAST too.

Most of the driver availability issues that plagued XP x64 when it was launched aren't a problem anymore, although you may have trouble finding drivers for certain older wireless adapters.
 
XP 64 is like the redhead stepchild of Microsoft OSes, why wouldn't you want Vista 64 which has much better support?
 
What are your system specs? You'll find linux is workable, and you can even install WINE to run windows. However, that can hold you over until you can get vista for cheap. But you mind end up liking linux :)

I'm going to assume that you have actually used XP64.... I mean you wouldn't make a comment like that without actually having any experience with the OS......right?

Perhaps you could go into a bit of detail here, maybe explain why you feel the way that you do about XP64.....and let's not use the old "shitty driver support" explanation here....okay?

I'm really curious as to why you feel this way. I have used it off and on for a while and I haven't had any real problems......your experiences and insight would be great.
 
$100 is nothing! :confused:

In Sweden, the retail version of Vista Home Premium is $466. The OEM version of Home Premium is $160. The retail version of Vista Ultimate is the equivalent of US$837.

And they wonder why people pirate the new OS? Or do like me and order their copy from some american store that ships to the EU..

Well apart from problems actually finding drivers (this is still a problem, both my printer and scanner don't have XP x64 drivers), there are compatibility issues with a lot of software, not to mention the total lack o 16bit application support.

Lacking 16bit might not sound like a huge problem, until you consider all the 32bit applications wrapped up in 16bit installers (lots of games from between 1998 through 2002 are like this)
 
JimmiG, Rebel44, it's unfortunate, but you guys are prolly just paying for the EU lawsuit, in addition to any import taxes your country may charge. MS has to recoup the monies it is forking over to the EU for lawsuits and various countries for import taxes somehow. But, then again, MS seems to charge differing amounts in differing places for no apparent reason at times as well.


OP... Finding a legit version of Vista under $100 is not easy. As others have said, academic versions can be had for quite a savings if you can get your hands on one. No longer used retail copies of Xp retail may start showing up here and there also.
 
Yes, everything is more expensive here than in the US, but Vista takes the cake. For $840, you can still build a complete system here. In fact, I don't think my current rig cost more than that, all parts bought in Sweden. Ultimate retail seems to be about $290 in the US - I doubt anyone can build a usable PC for $290. So there's defintely something else going on apart from the usual import taxes, sales taxes etc.
