Cheap GPU for light/med gaming.

Sister is a single mom who doesn't have a whole lot of cash, and one of her few things she likes to do is play games when her kid is sleeping. (And quite frankly, I'd like her to get the hell off our living room PC all night so I can look stuff up when I'm downstairs)

So I am piecing together a computer good enough for some light gaming. Currently have a Gigabyte P35-DS3L, E2140, 4GB of DDR2 800, 500 Watt Rosewill, and a 320GB SATA.

The fastest card I have laying around is a 4650 DDR2, which isn't terribly fast.


At most she'll be playing things like WoW, but mostly games like League of Legends. Any recommendations on a card that can do that easily but isn't too loud or powerhungry? Cheaper is DEFINITELY better... and used is fine.

i'm not well versed in low/med nvidia but i'll throw in my .02 for amd graphics

minimum i would get is a 6570, it will run it all just fine (probably not maxed) but its pretty cheap and will run everything with decent frame rates.

I'd recommend a 6770, its not a whole lot more then a 6570 and it performs much better.

If you are willing to stretch your definition of cheap a little then a 6850 would be a great card too, it will most likely max out anything she plays at 1080p no problem.

or if you are just looking for cheap, look for a used 9800gt or gtx, you can get them for around $50 (hell i'm pretty sure i have an EVGA 9800gtx i can throw your way for shipping+$10, pm me if interested)

Even the old 260's are pretty cheap these days and would perform fairly well.

Only other Nvidia card i can recommend is a 460, i know i bought one a while back for a friend and he is a pretty heavy gamer, only thing i've heard him bitch about is gaming at 1080p on skyrim with AA and the high res texture pack on
 
Extra screen I have is a 19" 1440x900, so that resolution.

Edit: Thanks for the offer on the 9800GTX, but that's a power hog/heat generator/noisemaker as far as I remember! (Plus I'm not sure if I trust this PSU to it) Very generous offer though, I'm sure that would go in a flash if you put it up on the FS section for a similar price.

At 1440x900, you dont have to spend much at all. I would go for a new card (just personal preference. I've seen wow maxed out (this expansion) with a 9800gt, so anything around that would be a good investment. Heres some of my suggestions.

$1-$50
Used - 8800gt, See if you can find a good deal on a 5770 or 6770.
New - ATI 6450

$50-75 This is the sweet spot for used cards.
Used - 9800gtx, 4870, 5770/6770. Any of these will easily max out wow at 1440x900
New - GTS430, 6670 (amazing card for the price. Should be able to max out wow easily).

Up to $100 Anything here will max out wow easily. I would go for a new card at this pricepoint.
6770, 7750 <--- New card, takes very very little power to run. Any power supply should be able to handle it. This will max out most games at 1440x900. I would go with one of these 2 cards if possible.
 
Just picked up a 8800 GT and 5750 on the forums for $85 shipped. Should be good, and a backup card on top of it. :D
 
7970 or GTX5803GB. (FAKE ADVICE INCASE YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND)

Yeah I just find that the price on the 6850 makes it worth getting.
Upgrade the cpu later and you will have a decent GPU still ready to go.
I really never buy lower than mid range unless the PC that the GFX card is going into will never be gaming.

Well, it's not for me, it's a gift. So I'm not going to spend all that much money, especially considering I'm donating most of the other parts, including the use of a screen.

Not looking for best frames per second, just something that will *manage*. A 5750 will do the job at 1440x900.
