Hey guys,

I am going to be at school this semester for about 14 hours a day for around 3 days a week. I decided to look for a laptop so I could just go in the library, work on my online classes during the break between on-campus courses and do some mild gaming.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of cash because I already have a decently powerful desktop computer to handle everything else when I'm not away.

I was looking at an Acer with the e-350 and 6310 video card. The price is really appealing but I have a feeling the processor is not going to be enough to play anything at a decent frame rate. I don't want to play Crysis or anything like that, but it would be nice to play some FPS and not be limited to everything else. The mobile video card naming schemes seem to be really weird to me as well, please help me out!

I originally had a budget around $400 but I'm willing to bump that up to around $600 because I think I need an i3? Tell me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

The best recommendation I can make to you on that budget is to pick a laptop that features an AMD Llano chipset, the stronger the better.

You should be able to pick one up from HP in the dv6qze line (I believe) for about $600, and that's the best laptop for gaming on that budget I believe you can buy.

Llano better than i3?

Cheap and mobile gaming doesn't usually go hand in hand. However I would have to recommend the LLano CPU/GPU combo too.

LLano CPU is barely nipping at the heels of i3, if that.

LLano GPU however is nearly as good as an NVIDIA 540m. (At least the 6620G that AnandTech tested was).

And they have very nearly all day battery life. Not quite 14 hours(my cellphone doesn't get 14 hours), but still not bad.

Ah, I see. That's very surprising that the Llano and 540m are comparable. After doing more research I've realized that I am going to need to drop some more cash to get what I want.

I was looking at this:
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-TimelineX-AS3830TG-6431-13-3-Inch-Aluminum/dp/tech-data/B0051OL8R4/ref=de_a_smtd

It has an i5 as well as the 540m. I think the price tag is attractive but I do have some concerns. Is a 13.3" too small for gaming? The resolution is the same as most 15.6" now so I don't think that should matter too much. I'm close to pulling the trigger on this one unless you guys can convince me otherwise. The i5 is obviously more powerful than the Llano, is the i5 worth $100 - $150 extra?

Oh yeah, you get a free Xbox if you buy this laptop too, which is pretty convenient since mine just broke. :)

13.3 is too small for gaming if you ask me. I wouldn't go any lower than 15.
