    Hey,

So looking on the kijiji in my area and contacting a few sellers I've come across an interesting option. I haven't seen one of these servers in the wild so I'm checking with the best source on the internet....the [H].

    A Levono RD240
    CPU: 2 x e5620 Intel Xeon E5620
    RAM: 24 Gb DDR3
8 Drive bays but no caddies

The seller has 6 3.5" 3Tb SAS drives that he can include. The total cost would be $600.

I was working with him on another option as well.

    He has a DL380 g7
    2x 6-core Xeon
    64Gb Ram
16 2.5" bays, some caddies, need extension sas cables for 2nd backplane
    No additional hard drives.
$390 (would swap out hex cores for 2xE5620 and lower the price to $320)

I'm trying to decide between these two systems. I'm looking for lots of storage, needs to be a little speedy, it's serving my plex server where I have a bunch of users accessing it at any one time. If I was to get the DL380 w/2.5" drives I would probably cheap out and get 2Tb 5400 RPM drives or try to find a bulk deal on 1Tb 7200rpm drives used or something.

Anyone have any experience with the RD240? Which would you recommend out of these two?

    Thanks for your time!

Do NOT get an HP server..... They have all patches/firmware updates locked behind a paywall for enterprise customers only.

Look for something supermicro. There were some used systems inside the 2U 24x2.5" recently on ebay with similar specs to what you listed.

I didn't know that about used HP servers. I've usually only ever bought Dells (like 2950s and r710s). If I could find me a 12 bay r510 that would be excellent....but those are pretty rare.

I'll keep any eye out for super micro versions of what I'm looking for. So have you had any experience with the RD240?

Dells are very good with support in the used market. I have a couple R710s that are fully patched, and it's very easy to get upgrades for them.

I'm trying to wait out for a 12+2 bay r510. That would be perfect for what I need. Throw an old h700 in there and you'll get some decent storage space for a long time.
