The SC420 is good stuff. It likes to chew on Gromacs. I've had one for a few weeks.

Well I've been down a rig for a little less than a week now... but it shows. :(
I had to turn in my 1.6Ghz lappy but they finally gave me the replacement. A 1.8Ghz Tablet.
Not much difference in processing power but any improvement is..... improvement!
To make up for the loss I threw together another 1.0 P3 (just need a Power Supply) and I'm looking at buying the SC420!

Maybe I'll be able to fend off the couple of guys trying to pass me. :)

BakedOn, PM me. I have a few lower-end PSUs that would work for than 1.0 P3 (200w-300w) range.

I greatly appreciate the offer but I stole one from work this morning. :D

My boss said "Cool" Since it's from a gutted P3 we had laying around. So TECHNICALLY it really isn't stealing... but I like to think I'm a 'rebel'.

Thanks again!

Good to go.

Maybe you gents can confirm something for me.

Have always operated under the assumption that AMD XP / Sempron-A boxen were better at folding than Northwood core Pentium 4s, and most of my current boxen are based on Socket A (except two Celeron-II boxen and one Athlon 64). Given how 1.6 Northwoods are finally going down in price, and given the substantially lower cost of some of the motherboards, is a P4 worth looking at?

Some of the Grmocs definately like P4s. Sometimes my 2.53Ghz Celeron is faster than my fastest Athlon's. I don't have exact numbers but on the 364 point Gromacs (P1475), I can get around 340 Points per day out of my 2.53 Ghz Celeron. My 2.3 Ghz Athlon XP (Barton Core) gets about 290-310 for the same point WU. Of course, my Pentium M 1.8Ghz, will go at about 582 Points per Day on that unit.

On the 600 Point WUs (P1322, etc.) it is closer. An Athlon XP (Barton Core @ 2.3Ghz gets 254 Points per Day, Pentium M @ 1.8Ghz gets 279 Points per Day and my 2.53Ghz Celeron gets around 260 (I will have to confirm this number when I get home).

Anyways. it depends on the core, but Pentium 4s are good especially if you aren't paying for the power. Pentium M are the best from a pp$.

Someone mentioned it in another tread... but I can't find it.

Anyways... a beowulf cluster of Pentium's and P2's (lest than 350) wouldn't be too cost effective, saying if you had the hardware lying around... couldn't it be possible to set it up and get it running on some cores?

And just to tickle the imagination (and cause I'm not all to sure exactly how a beowulf cluster works) How fast would say... 10 FX-55's or P4EE's in a cluster fold?

I'm just interested in the technology... Might be worth getting some p1's together if it's cost effective enough (they sell chips on ebay for under a dollar. LOL)

I found the SC420 at Dell (the two links from geeks.com didn't work for me) and I have to admit the price I was looking at ($289 before s/h) is awesome in my opinion but a couple of questions.

To set this up on folding would any folding compatible O/S work? I've got an extra XP license I could use, but their recommened MS o/s didn't include XP... or would it have to be Linux?

Can these server machines be pressed into desktop use or should it be left in the corner crunching work? The reason I ask is that it is an easier purchase for me if I can let one of my kids (all younger than 7) play games on it occassionaly as opposed the black tower that has to be left alone in the corner.

Again, an awesome deal, just trying to figure out if I could make it work. I need more boxen, but I've been told I have to share...

Thanks,
Faron

I'm 99.9% sure your XP O/S would be just fine on that. I'm thinking the reason Dell does not list XP as a supporting O/S is because they would rather sell you a 2k3 server package, and the box is listed in their server catergory.

edit: would make a great desktop
Sharing... somethings just never get easier.

You've got to play around with the drivers a bit, but Windows XP supposedly works. I'm running 2000 server because I had it but other people have had success.

Yes xp will work fine, I installed XP and NT on it, the only problem I ran into was that XP/NT didnt like that LAN drivers that came with the unit. I had to download the Drivers from Broadcom on the intarweb .

Man that 2.53 Ghz Celery D loves to fold! I wish i had a few more.
