So I have this external hard drive thingamajiggy ...

Right now I have a 40GB maxtor hard drive ... I also have a 52xlite on drive that I took out of my computer because I got a DVD RW that is being a pain in the ass.
Anyway ... I want to create some external thingamajiggy that will let me use my existing external usb2.0 thingy but still let me not go out and buy another one...

you see I want to create something cheap

I'm wondering if I could remove the existing IDE cable from the extranal thingy and put in a normal slave master cable and hook the hard drive and the cd rom on it and make windows recognize that both are there

tho if I do this there might be some usb 2.0 bandwith issues given that I use both of the devices at the same time

another idea is to make a box that will let me reach in and switch the power / ide cable in order to select the appropriate device
given that I turn it off and windows recognizes the switch

what are your thoughts on this ?

should I spend 30 more bucks and get another for my cd rom drive ?

PS: is there an easy effective way to shut off the fan in the thingy ... I'm wearing headphones and I can hear it .... gargh

PPS: I did not want to post this in mods or any other section since this is more of a general idea for the project

PPPSS: This is to be hooked up to my laptop (see specs below)
