Hi, I'm the proud ownder of a XFX 5850, and was wondering what the cheapest card would be that would be good enough to perform physx with the physx fix.

I've heard about the 9600GSO, but I'm not sure if that's what I should go with.

Thanks!

Get at least a GTS250...there is a report at driverheaven showing that the GTS250 is the sweet spot for price performance.
If you want cheaper then at the very least get a used 8800gt or higher. Should be about $50.
Lower cards will not give you all the performance you can get.

I used a 9600gt and it worked fine for physx alongside my 5850. However, I didn't really see the benefit of physx so removed the 9600gt and now keeping it as a backup card. My advice is save your money.

Aside from the expense of buying the extra card and the increased power bill you will have over what you currently pay now, the hurdles one has to go through to get an Nvidia card to work as a Physx card while using an ATI card as main are not really worth it.
Let me illustrate:
There's 2 ways to get an Nvidia card working as a Physx accelerator with and ATI card.

- Use the old drivers released before the ones that brick the Nvidia card when used with an ATI card, or
- The patch released by GenL.

Nvidia at any time can defeat both workarounds.

- On the first case those old drivers could simply not work well with the new physics effects present on that new game since there most likely will not be profiles in such driver to handle them.

- On the GenL patch case Nvidia can release updated code on either the game or the newer drivers that specifically defeats the patch and that is required for the game to run at all. They could also implement a harder to get around protection than the simple vendorID scheme they currently uses. Even if the new protection scheme was defeatable the best case scenario would be you spending periods of time without being able to use your card while GenL or anyone else that takes up the work for the patch releases an update for it. On top of that you will not have the assurance that the patch will not break other games.

Remember, they already went as far as bricking their current customer's cards. Who is to say that they won't continue to actively discourage it and block any workarounds in the future.

I installed my 9800gtx that I had stuffed in the closet in favor of my new 260 core216, turns out my case had a heat issue, so had to yank it out till i can add some ventillation.
My neighbor hasa similar setup and just bought Batman Ark Asylum, gonna drop by this weekend and see how it looks.
