So I was tight for money and sold my FubarIII, and now instantly regret it. The downgrade to onboard sound (ALC889 on the Gene-Z) is horrendous, and I am now immediately looking for a cheap substitute to tide me over for a year or so. In the mean time I am using the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB I had attached between my laptop and TV. Better than the onboard, but far from ideal.

I'm mainly 70% music, 20% movies, and 10% gaming. So 5.1 or fancy gaming features aren't necessary at all. I was thinking a Xonar, but with the USB X-Fi option also being pretty lacklustre, I really don't know what route to take other than dealing with awful sounding music for a while.
