I priced this out at the egg the other day

Rosewill 128MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 266 (PC 2100) Unbuffered System Memory Model RW266/128 - Retail
x2 @ 12.99 each

AMD Duron 1.6 Applebred 266MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model DHD1600DLV1C - OEM
x2 @ 42.99 each

PC CHIPS M811LU Socket A (Socket 462) VIA KT266A ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
x2 @ 19.99 each

151.94 (w/o shipping) for 3.2ghz. hmm.

granted they are pc chips boards, so throw in another 50~ total and you can probably get another style board.. just add those to existing diskless farm.

The only thing I caution you all on is this; power costs of producing work units.

The small fast ones are few and far between these days and machines below 2.0 gigs take much longer to get work done.

A faster CPU will pay for itself in a month or two of folding.

Just some thoughts

Listen to the man, and dont make him tell his story again  :p

Granted.. I have free power.. so any and all boxen are welcome to my farm.

Tiger has a Sempron 2800+ and PC Chips mobo here:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1238245&CatId=0
for $70 AR. They also usually run a memory deal, this month it was 256 MB PC3200 for $10 AR. Now that's cheap boxen.

Yeah, we all know BillRs story.
/BillR - "When I was a young man we didn't have this new-fangled E-Lectricity in our houses, we had to get the mule to walk around in circles to turn the generator so we could fold with our .005 MHz Pentiums. Up hill. Both ways!!!!"

;) ;)

I got that beat, my first (real) computer was a timex sinclair ZX-81, if I forgot to wind the stem everyday it quit! No joke it ran at 1 mhz to the best of my memory (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) I do know I paid $99 for the comp and $149 for the 16K memory expansion pack and cassette tape interface (cassette recorder not included)

you should have seen the flight simulator program I bought for it also :)

Timex Sinclair ZX-81

I had one of the first Sinclairs. In fact it is probably still at my parent's house. That was before it was bought out by Timex. I'll see if I can find a photo online. I remember soldering the parts together and then later getting a 1k upgrade for it.

edit: found a photo and article on it http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/computers/zx80/zx80.htm

wow, that thing was a blazing 3.5 mhz!!!! I gotta take the old memory bank in for the 4th decade tune up :)

Not to mention I had to walk 27miles in five feet of snow just to catch the school bus and that was uphill both ways too? Did I mention my parents could not afford to buy me shoes either? ;)

Remember that time I had to fend off the polar bear with my loose-leaf binder??
