Cheap Audio Noob needs suggestions

I just finished painting/re-organizing my room, so I decided to upgrade my computer speakers . . . My old speakers were the cheap Harmon/Kardon speakers that came with an old Dell Computer.

I just bought from compUSA the Altec Lansing VS2220 speakers for $20-- but while they look good, the quality seems less than spectacular so far (slightly tinny, and seemingly not quite as clear as my old ones), but I'll try it out for a few more days to see..

Before I consider returning/exchanging these, I'm hoping one of the many experts :D here can give me some advise on what to get. I'm willing to spend a little more for something good, but my limits about 30-40, or 50 at most if it's 4/5.1.


My main problem though is space. I've got a very small bedroom, and have 2 computers set up on my desk connected to one monitor. One computer I use mostly as a television, and the other (for which these speakers are intended) for everything else - ie: gaming, dvds. Ideally, it would be great if both systems could share the same speakers, but I'm not counting on that happening.

I wish I could get a 4/5.1 system, but a lack of space essentially makes that impossible. (Besides, I already have a nice surround-sound system /w DTS in the living room, consisting of 4 excellent polk audio speakers - never needed a sub-woofer with those)

A 2.1 system is a possibility, if the subwoofer is either less than 5.5 inches in width (to fit on the side of my desk), or if it has a cable long enough to reach around the other side (8-10 ft for wire to extend) and can safely sit in front of the radiator.

I've been looking at these speakers: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2173,CONTENTID=9819 as well, I think the subwoofer might just fit, but how's the quality on it?

You sound like you're in a headphone situation.

For your budge the Sennheiser HD201s are sounding very nice... I got mine for $21 shipped from www.tigerdirect.com.
Some other good cans for the money & under $50 are:
AKG K26P
Koss PortaPro
Koss KSC-75

And if you can extend your budget up to $100:
Audio Technica A500 -$100
Grado SR-60 - $70
Alessandro MS-1 - $99 (it's better than a Grado SR-125 and cheaper! one of the best for the $)
Sennheiser HD280 - $80
AKG K240S - $100

Out of all these can's only the K240s might need an amp. Of course they still sound good without one.
 
Thanks for the quick suggestions, but I think I'd prefer to stick with speakers for now. Headphones are simply to annoying to wear for any prolonged period (esp. in the case of watching DVDs)., regardless of the quality.
