I've had a Dell Powerconnect 2616 (16-port gigabit) switch as the backbone of my home network for the last 9 years or so. It recently quit - lights don't turn on or anything.

I've got my network back together temporarily by chaining a few spare garbage 5-port switches together.

Are there any cheaper switches that stand out as being a particularly good value for the money, particularly in an unmanaged SoHo environment?

Define cheap. A HP Procurve 1410 is a rock solid switch. Either that or a Cisco 200 series. Both will cost ~ $200. Apart from that, I've heard the Netgear Prosafe are fairly decent for home usage.

Netgear Prosafe are decent enough, probably won't last as long as the powerconnect. Thought about finding another powerconnect? I am partial to the 1800-24g due to their price (Under $150 off ebay) and easy to use web management software. They act as just a plain old switch outta the box.

For a super cheap switch I'd go Netgear GS116E or Procurve 1410.

The HP Procurve 1800 or 1810 are better as is the Dell PowerConnect 2816

If Cheap is a requirement, hit fleabay. There are a TON of 16-24port gigabit switches there for a $100 or less. Obviously not new, but it all depends on your priorities.

unmanaged? plenty of choices...

i'd probably get another dell... 2816s seem to be fantastic for the price... but may be overkill for your needs...

EDIT: WHOA what the heck happened to the 28xx series prices? it looks like they've nearly doubled!

still seems a little high.... but yea, when i just browsed there it was 350

what a racket...
