Okay so thinking about getting rid of AIM and Yahoo I use MSN every now and again but damn I hate the freaking ads that get 400 times bigger on yahoo or the music ones on AIM so.

I would like something that can leave me logged into AIM and Yahoo MSN does not matter so much, but something that would alert me when I get my yahoo mail, and maybe something that can also alert me to hotmail would be freaking awesome.

Anyways I tried pidgin I did not like the design of it all the names and such are too big I have 30-40 friends on at one time would like something like AIM where the names are small and I can see everyone at once let me know whats out there that would work for me thanks [H]

A vote for pidgin here. Trillian became crappy over the years and got further and further from simple.

Digsby, I have used every public chat application and they all are missing stuff, this one literally has it all. It has the GUI of trillian and the functionality of pidgin and may I add it also syncs up with your email, facebook, myspace, and some site that I don't use. It also has incorporated FB chat into its buddy list.

I've used Trillian , Pidgin, and Digsby in the past, and my vote would have to go to Pidigin at this time. Trillian was good, but when I was using it there was a paid pro version that had extra features (not sure if that's still the case). Pidign is feature packed, connects to many IM networks, can check email, has a small footprint, and has a minimalistic theme (some may not like that).

I've been testing Digsby on my home PC for the past few months. It's got a very nice looking GUI and connects to social networks. It's still in beta, so features are still coming out (they've got almost weekly updates), but I've gone back to Pidgin since it has a smaller footprint and generally feels like it has a quicker response.

All three are great programs and much better then AIM/MSN. You may want to check out/wait for Trillian's new IM program Astra, not sure when it will be released though.

Holy shit I just got digsby and it freaking rocks it does exactly what I wanted it too, jarek is right it does seem a bit slower compared to Pidgin but it offers more in the way of chating features with the popup, and mainly checking my mail that feature is the most important one as I have alot of accounts and this thing is freaking cool.

Now if I can just find a way to speed it up

I'll second Digsby too for the extra integration of email/facebook/etc. I love the little pop up notifications it gives and I think it looks a little nicer than pidgin. Pidgin and Trillian are both pretty good and I think it's just a personal preference and that you just have to try each one for a little bit.

I just started using Digsby after using GAIM/Pidgin forever. I love it. Webcam support (which Pidgin sadly lacks).

Its a mem hog whore tho. Very bling bling! Me like.

Trying, thanks btw.

Edit:
Downloaded it. It is a tad slower but not by much. It does look really nice and can't wait to keep using it.

THANKS!!!

Why can't someone just come out with a good chat app that does what it's supposed to do - let people chat - and not everything including the kitchen sink, the mortgage payments, and... well, what next? :D

Digsby looks interesting, promising even, but then I see all the stuff it's supposed to do and think, "Ok, I just need a chat app for YIM/MSN coverage, do I really need to mess with all this as well?"

But then again, I've been chatting online since 1977 with people, so I've seen all this and a lot more that never even made the light of day, as the saying goes. From basic text conversations over dialup back in the late 70s using Dow Jones Info Services, to CB Simulator on CompuServe, through the heydays of the BBS movement, into the online service days that turned QuantumLink into AOL, nearly 20 years now on IRC and beyond, and still no one has done it right I'd say. Damned shame... maybe I should make one myself sometime, who knows.

I'd put another vote in for Digsby. In the past 6 months, I've been testing out all the chat programs.

-I used trillian for about 2 months - It is in serious need of a new version IMO. Its just not very user friendly, even for advanced users.
-I used pidgin for about a month. I was pretty pleased with it all in all, with some little things that bugged me.
-Then I checked out Digsby last night. Its highly customizable (skins, IM protocols, emails), and is generally just very streamlined and easy to use. I havent found a single thing that I dislike thus far :)

We call it Miranda.

I hear ya dude. A big bug I found is when you write a message like:

I hate using my uncles iMac!

Instead of "hate" being italizied (sp), it formats the entire sentence, even you're entire profile (aim) users. They gotta fix that.

I've been using Trillian on my main windows machine for quite a few years now. I had GAIM (now Pidgin) briefly, but it would crash randomly, which Trillian never did. On my Linux box I still use GAIM/Pidgin though.

I'm hoping Trillian Astra ends up being great. They've sure been working on it long enough!

One could say the same thing about something like Yahoo Instant Messenger and their Vista-only client. I mean, Vista's been out nearly 1.5 years now, been around much longer than that in development, and Yahoo can't seem to get their shit together with a group of programmers well enough after all this time to actually put out some damned product? I'll never figure that one out. All they offer is a "preview" of what it's supposed to look like, some damned Flash mini-movie that does nothing but look like vaporware to me.

It also reminds me of the permanently-in-beta ICQ thing. I used ICQ when it first appeared well over a decade ago and it was crap then, amazing how over the years it just got worse and still never really ever got out of beta. I know, I know, software is always in beta, but at least most applications don't advertise each and every release as a beta. :)

Well, I'd never heard of Digsby before. But after reading this thread, I gave it a go. I've left Pidgin for Digsby :)

my problem with using digsby so far is the alerts for reciving e-mail does not work so well aside from that everything is good
