Just any FYI, Charter has increased their base speed from 60mpbs to 100mpbs a few months ago.

I was still getting 60mpbs and started to research why i had not gotten this free increase.

There are a lot of posts about this and I can confirm you do have to call their support line to get the new speed.

The representative told me it is in the system as a new "service" but is the same price as the old service.

Took about 5 minutes on the phone and I was increased to 100mpbs.

Thank you for this! I have 2 Charter connections that I need to check out. Do you know if this change is just for residential or business as well?

I think it is for both but can't find any information that business is being left out of the speed upgrade.

To give you some idea how much ISPs are charging for what, I have 5 different accounts with 3 different ISPs:

    Charter Residential 60/5 - 65
    Charter Business 100/7 - 170
    Charter Business 60/5 - 60
    Wow 500/50 - 60
    Comcast/xfinity 300/30 - 99

This is between 3 sites and 2 different states. As you can tell, it's all over the place!

I checked my Charter connections and I don't have any increase in speed. Do I have to call them and ask them for it? Or just power cycle the modem?

You have to call them about your "60"s to get the increase to 100. It is a "plan change" (but costs same) so have your account info handy.

I'm always scared to have them change anything. It usually ends with a higher price and 'I can't put you back on your cheaper plan'. I'll just wait until they roll it out or there's an outage I can call about.

Totally understand! I have been in that position before. I hope they change the roll out policy on this shortly so it easier for everyone. Until then, maybe you can do more research on this and let everyone know what you find out.

Here is an article about this upgrade.

"who informed me that there was indeed a speed upgrade available, to 100/5, but that customers would need to contact Charter to get this upgrade, as Charter cannot make any unauthorized changes to accounts. "

Interesting article. I wonder if on the bill there's now some new higher rate with a 'promotional discount' applied so the rate is at the same as 60/5. Seen this done waaaaay too many times by isps in the last few years...

I wonder if some of it was market? I was an old TWC on their ultimate package (50/5) after the buyout, I just had to restart my modem to get their 60/5. And didn't have to do anything (maybe restarted modem, don't recall) to get the 100/10. I didn't call and no change in bill. And this was residential.

For my accounts, they've always been Charter, so not sure. I know the whole TWC transition was all over the place in terms of uniformity.

    Yikes, i had ATT 6Mbit/s for $40-45.
Currently Comcast 55Mb for $50-60 after the $30/mo for 1 yr. My DL is up to 65-70 often.

As soon as I get my next bill, I will screen shot it so you can see the line items.

Your upload has to be more like 6 or 7 for you to hit 5+. Try the dslreports speedtest and see what you get--I've found it more accurate across all isp than anything else.
Awesome! Thank you for doing this! Sure will make dealing with them for an 'upgrade' easier. (y)

Here ya go. Just a single line item for the internet service. Even shows $0.00 for the service change.

Wow, that's super! I'm going to call them this week. (y)

Looks like I'll have to work on finally configuring the faster router we have for 100Mbps speed, hehe. :D

Thank you again for the details!

Just paid (and am now waiting...) for business service to get installed at my house. 100/10 for $100/month with Charter. 5 years ago when I had charter at an old address Inet alone was $105/month for 30/5 from charter. So in my neck of the woods (SE Michigan) pricces remain constant but service speeds are getting better quickly.

Generally, I've seen the same thing across all our ISPs/locations as well--the price remains the same with what you get getting faster and faster.

I still remember when we had an ISDN line and our LAN was 10Mbit shared--my how things have changed...

    GOOD TIMES.

I was a Charter customer for 10 years prior to moving a few years back to an area they don't service. More than once we had to call and ask to get the "new" speeds because they don't move old accounts over automatically for some damn reason. I remember my first charter service (2005) was 3 down/1 up! DSL was honestly a better choice because of the price, but the "bundle" deal made it work.

Just an FYI. A lot of charter/spectrum areas had their upload speed bumped up today. 100/10 and 300/20.

I got off the phone about an hour ago with Charter about a speed increase on our residential line--no billing change, no funny stuff, just faster speeds. dslreports.com/speedtest was showing 65/5.5 and now it's 110/10 and spiking to 115/11. I'm a happy camper. (y)

And when I mentioned that I heard that there were some speed updates available, the agent knew exactly what it was and was happy to do it. It was one of the most painless isp dealings I've ever had. (y)

I'll have to try the business accounts when I get time, but I know the location I could use it will also need a router update to take full advantage of it.

So I just talked to Charter business and it's a different story on this side--they have more tiers going all the way up to 300/20 for a whopping $299/mo. But on one account it's $20 more to move to 100/10 and on another it's a $35 reduction. Definitely makes me wonder what's the fastest speed available now on residential...

Thank you very much. Our cheaper residential line is now almost at the same speed as our business line at 1/2 the cost. (y)
